Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Miami FL 337 PM EDT Wed Apr 17 2024

New LONG TERM

SHORT TERM
(Rest of today through Thursday)
Issued at 1208 PM EDT Wed Apr 17 2024

Conditions across South Florida will remain dry and seasonable through the short term as surface high pressure and stout upper-level ridging prevail over the region. Breezy easterly winds along the periphery of the surface high - currently located over the western Atlantic - will continue to advect low-level moisture over the area which could result in a few cumulus clouds developing during peak daytime heating.

A warming trend will continue tomorrow as winds begin to veer to the east-southeast escorting the warm air from the Caribbean.
There is potential for highs to reach the upper 80s or even 90 across southwest Florida, with east coast temperatures in the low to mid 80s.

LONG TERM
(Thursday night through next Tuesday)
Issued at 312 PM EDT Wed Apr 17 2024

Quiet and warm conditions will continue over South Florida through the rest of the week and over the weekend as mid to upper level ridging sits over the Gulf. At the surface, high pressure in the area will lead to light south-southeast winds. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s over the interior, with the sea breeze keeping coastal areas in the mid to upper 80s.
Overnight lows will range from the mid 60s over the interior, to the low 70s near coastal areas.

Early next week, a mid-level trough will swing across the Gulf states into the Southeast US, flattening the persistent ridge over the Gulf. This system is expected to send a frontal boundary across South Florida on Tuesday, and could bring some showers and thunderstorms with it, though confidence is low this far out. The best chances for convective activity would be across the Lake Okeechobee area. After the boundary passes through and winds turn northerly, temperatures will cool off a bit.

AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1208 PM EDT Wed Apr 17 2024

VFR conditions continue at all TAF sites for the 18Z period. The easterly winds will reach 10-15 KT, with gusts up to 20-25 KT, as we move into the afternoon. A brief westerly Gulf breeze is expected at KAPF from 20Z until around 00Z. Tonight into tomorrow morning, easterly winds will weaken, with a light breeze up to 10 KT, at all TAF sites.

MARINE
Issued at 1208 PM EDT Wed Apr 17 2024

A moderate to fresh easterly wind flow will continue across the local waters today as high pressure remains in place over the Western Atlantic. These winds will slowly subside and become southeasterly starting on Thursday as the surface high shifts eastward. Seas across the Atlantic waters will range from 2 to 4 feet today before declining to 2 feet or less by the end of the week. Meanwhile, seas across the Gulf waters remain at 2 feet or less.

BEACHES
Issued at 1208 PM EDT Wed Apr 17 2024

The risk of rip currents along the Atlantic Coast will remain high on Wednesday as moderate easterly flow prevails. Conditions will begin to improve tonight as winds become lighter.
