Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Melbourne FL 944 PM EST Thu Jan 21 2021

UPDATE. The forecast remains largely on track this evening, with just a few minor updates made. A nearly zonal front developing across north Florida tonight will be kept at bay by surface high pressure crossing the peninsula as it moves eastward out of the GOMEX. Locally, this means dry conditions continuing overnight, with morning lows in the low 50s, except for upper 40s along portions of the inland Treasure Coast.

Still a challenging forecast, with lower than normal confidence on the fog potential tonight. The HRRR has backed off on much of the fog for east central Florida, keeping the bulk of it across SW Florida. However, there are still some indications of possible fog development, namely in the LAV and HiRes ARW guidance. But, with winds remaining around or slightly above 5mph overnight due to the tightening pressure gradient between the front and high pressure, this scenario would favor low stratus development instead. Thus, have been reluctant to remove the mention of patchy fog from the forecast, should winds prove less than anticipated, but will not be enhancing the wording at this time. Whatever does form, be it fog or low stratus, it is expected to burn off in the couple of hours after sunrise Friday morning.

AVIATION. Confidence remains lower than normal on patchy fog development tonight. Additionally, winds forecast to remain around 5kts through the overnight would favor low stratus as opposed to FG. Nonetheless, the highest chances for seeing any fog or low stratus will continue to be across the inland terminals. Currently, have included TEMPOS there, but they may be needed after around 10Z at coastal terminals, should anything develop there. VFR conditions returning tomorrow morning, with any fog or low stratus burning off after sunrise. Then, SW winds around 8-10kts Friday afternoon, with dry conditions persisting.

MARINE. Favorable boating conditions persisting overnight, as high pressure crosses the peninsula as it moves eastward out of the GOMEX. W winds remaining around 10-15kts overnight, as the pressure gradient tightens between the high pressure and a nearly zonal frontal boundary across northern Florida. Seas 2-3ft.
