Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Melbourne FL 926 AM EST Tue Jan 21 2020

DISCUSSION.

. Freeze Warning Now in Effect for Lake and Inland Volusia Counties Tonight . . Frigid Wind Chills Expected Tonight . . Very Hazardous Boating and Beach Conditions Developing Today .

Rest of Today . Elevated low level northerly winds across the area today will continue to strengthen across the area into tonight as high pressure builds across the eastern U.S. and low pressure develops offshore the east coast of Florida. This will continue strong cold air advection through this period, producing breezy to windy conditions, especially along the coast and well below normal temperatures. Highs expected to only reach the mid to upper 50s from Volusia/Lake Counties southward through Osceola/N Brevard counties this afternoon, with max temps in the low 60s farther south through Okeechobee County and the Treasure Coast.

Tonight . (Modified Previous Discussion) Winds from the NNW will bring the coldest air so far this season to east central FL. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect after midnight through early Wed morning as we expect cold temperatures to combine with winds of 10 mph or higher to produce wind chills of 35 degrees or less. Plan ahead to wear layers if going outside tonight and Wed morning. The Freeze Watch has been upgraded to a Freeze Warning for Lake and inland Volusia counties tonight as as sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected late tonight.

AVIATION. VFR conditions generally expected, with breezy/windy NNW flow expected across the area today. Wind speeds will range from 12-16 knots over the interior, to around 15-20 knots along the coast with gusts up to 20-30 knots expected. After sunset, gusts should decrease inland while remaining to 20-25 kt along the coast through the night.

MARINE. Today-tonight . (Previous Discussion) Winds will rapidly increase this morning as the pressure gradient tightens from the coastal waters of the Carolinas towards south Florida. A Small Craft Advisory across the waters will transition to a Gale Warning for this afternoon and through the night. Winds will pick up late this morning and peak tonight to 30 knots with gusts up to 40-45 knots. With such a strong wind flow, seas will also increase rapidly today, building from 7 to 10 feet this morning to 9 to 13 feet by early evening and up to 15 feet late tonight.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
