Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL Issued by National Weather Service Melbourne FL 345 PM EST Thu Feb 20 2020

DISCUSSION. A trough extending from the northwest Atlantic towards northern FL and into the Gulf states this afternoon will see the development of a low pressure area off the coast of southeast U.S. this afternoon and continue to do so as it lifts to the northeast tonight. It will then push south in the form of a cold front tonight, increasing the chances of rain showers and perhaps an isolated thunderstorm across the northern portions of the forecast area of the Nature Coast this evening. As the front crosses the gulf side waters, patchy fog might develop for a few hours and it was added to the forecast. The front is expected to move quickly, veering winds from the west this evening to north after midnight and by sunrise most of the forecast area will be under northerly winds. Thanks to this passage, cold air advection will reach the area with drier air and low temperatures will be able to drop to the mid 40s late tonight over Levy county, mid 50s for the Tampa Bay area and inland and 60s south of the Bay and inland areas. For Friday, winds will pick up over land and 15 to 20 mph along the coastal areas.

As northerly winds continue into Saturday morning, it will be the coldest morning, with temperatures ranging from the lower 30s around Levy county to upper 40s towards Lee county. A gradual warmup will begin to take place thereafter, and 80s are back in the forecast to kick off the work week as high pressure shifts east and winds turn ESE. Another front is expected to arrive next Thursday, and this will cool temps down once more.

AVIATION. A cold front will pass over the area tonight and winds will veer from S to SW tonight and after its passage after midnight, winds will be from the NW. Patchy fog possible to reduce visibilities for a few hours after midnight. After sunrise, winds will turn from the north and increase to 12-18 kt and higher gusts after 21/14z, especially for terminals near the coast. Ceilings will also reach IFR tonight and expected to become MVFR after mid- morning.

MARINE. A cold front will approach the gulf waters tonight and northwest to north winds and seas will increase after its passage late tonight. The Small Craft Advisory was extended to cover all the waters except the bays starting tonight through late Friday night. But as winds linger above advisory criteria, it will probably be needed to be extended for some of the waters into Saturday morning. Winds and seas will then improve during the day on Saturday.

FIRE WEATHER. A few showers will be possible across the area overnight as a cold front approaches from the north and patchy fog for a few hours is possible. Poor to fair dispersions are expected tonight. By Friday morning, winds will be from the north and increase over land, and possible range 15 to 20 mph along the coast during the day.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
