SHORT TERM
(Today through Monday Night)
Issued at 301 AM CST Sun Dec 3 2023
Against all the odds (drier air filtering in and a layer of upper level clouds streaming overhead), we still have juuust enough low level moisture left over for patchy dense fog to develop. Most of the locations that are seeing these decreased visibilities are close to or south of I-10, along with other usual trouble spots (e.g.
Conroe). Any fog that develops will dissipate by the mid morning hours both due to mixing and drier air steadily moving in as surface high pressure slides in from the west. PW values will be down to the 0.2"-0.3" range by sunrise (10th percentile: ~0.36"). Scattered to broken upper level clouds will remain in place throughout the day (especially for areas along and south of I-10) as Southeast TX remains in the right entrance region of a jet streak (upper level divergence) oriented SW to NE from east TX to the Ohio River Valley.
With southwest winds at the surface and westerly winds aloft, 850mb temperatures will reach the 11-14°C range today. So, expect high temperatures this afternoon to top out in the low 70s for most locations.
Another cold front pushes through on late Sunday night/early Monday morning as surface low pressure associated with a mid/upper level trough traverses the Central Plains. Temperatures on Sunday night won't be much different than Saturday night's though as we still only bottom out in mid 40s around the Brazos Valley (where there will be less upper level clouds) and upper 40s to low 50s further south (where there will be more upper level clouds). Surface high pressure moves directly overhead on Monday, but some will still have to deal with persistent upper level clouds. Even though the jet streak originally causing the cloud cover moves out eastward, there will be a steady stream of PVA extending towards the Upper TX coastline from a shortwave trough over northern Mexico. As a result, areas south of I-10 will still be dealing with upper level clouds even into Monday night. High temperatures on Monday will be in the mid to upper 60s areawide. On Monday night, low temperatures will range from the upper 30s to upper 40s. I trended temperatures down across the Brazos Valley/Piney Woods where skies will be clear to go along with calm winds (max radiational cooling). Closer to the coast, upper level clouds will persist, so upper 40s are more likely.

LONG TERM
(Tuesday through Saturday)
Issued at 301 AM CST Sun Dec 3 2023
Surface high pressure will move off to the east as the second half of the week progresses. This will allow for onshore winds to come back to the area and gradually strengthen until the next cold front moves on through in a Saturday night-Sunday morning time period. Cool nights and mild days can be expected Tuesday through Wednesday night (lows mainly in the 40s and highs mainly in the upper 60s to around 70).
A warmup will prevail in the Thursday through Saturday time period with high temperatures working their way back into into the mid to upper 70s by Saturday. With several days of onshore winds, rain chances return to the forecast (low on Friday afternoon and increasing on into Saturday afternoon). Currently expect a cool down starting on Saturday night (lows back into the 40s) in association with the next cold front.

AVIATION
(12Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 340 AM CST Sun Dec 3 2023
Isolated rounds of patchy fog around CXO, SGR, and LBX may continue through the mid-morning hours, but conditions have been steadily improving at all three sites over the past few observations as drier air filters in. VFR conditions will prevail for the remainder of the TAF period areawide after the fog dissipates. Winds become predominantly southwesterly around 7-10 knots this afternoon and into the overnight hours. On early Monday morning, a cold front begins to push into the area leading to winds becoming northwesterly in its wake. By Monday afternoon, winds will have transitioned to more of a northeasterly direction around 10 knots.

Issued at 301 AM CST Sun Dec 3 2023
Any lingering fog (not seeing anything significant on area webcams early this morning) is expected to dissipate some time this morning as drier air continues to move on in. Light winds and low seas will persist through at least midweek. The next significant cold front is current in the forecast to move across the area around a week from now (late Saturday night or early Sunday morning next weekend).
