Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX 1216 AM CDT Thu Jun 25 2026
New DISCUSSION, MARINE
KEY MESSAGES
- Hot conditions will continue this week, with potential for heat stress issues as heat indices approach 105-107F (41-42C) each day and WBGT risk peaks in the red category.
DISCUSSION
Issued at 1208 AM CDT Thu Jun 25 2026
A fairly mundane and typical summer-time pattern will prevail over Southeast Texas through early next week as mid-lvl ridging continues to exert its influence over the region. Although the placement of the ridge axis will gradually shift east of the area this weekend, subsident and dry conditions will continue to prevail with rain chances generally 10% or less each day through Tuesday. We will likely see periods of hazy skies during the forecast period, due to both high- altitude smoke from western US fires on Thursday, and periodic intrusions of Saharan Dust (the most prominent of which will arrive early next week). Heading towards the end of the forecast period, an upper-lvl disturbance may progress westward around the southern flank of the eastern US ridge. Mentionable (~15-25%) rain chances will thus return to the forecast on Wednesday, but naturally forecast uncertainty remains high at that time horizon.
Highs will range from the upper 80s near the coast to the mid 90s inland each day through next week. Peak heat indices in the 100-102 range today will increase into the 104 to 107 range by this weekend as dewpoints creep up a couple degrees. Peak WBGT values will remain solidly in the high (red) range each afternoon, so stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity in direct sunlight.
AVIATION
(00Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 635 PM CDT Wed Jun 24 2026
VFR conditions will generally prevail across the region through the forecast period. The exception may be a brief round of MVFR ceilings and/or visibility reductions that could impact a few terminals mainly between 10-14Z across locations west and northwest of the Houston metro area. Confidence was low enough to keep MVFR conditions out of the IAH/HOU TAF. Light southerly winds otherwise look to continue through the period.
MARINE
Issued at 1208 AM CDT Thu Jun 25 2026
Light to moderate southerly flow will prevail through the workweek, increasing slightly Friday into the weekend into the moderate to fresh range. Seas will generally run 2 to 4 ft through Friday increasing to 3 to 5 ft into the weekend.
