Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tallahassee FL 826 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

New UPDATE

KEY MESSAGES
Issued at 819 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

- There is a High Risk of rip currents at Bay and Gulf County beaches through early tonight. Pay attention to the beach flags and the advice of local officials.

- Well above normal temperatures are expected from Saturday through Monday, and parts of the region are likely to exceed Heat Advisory criteria. The heat will affect anyone without cooling and hydration.

UPDATE
Issued at 819 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

PoPs were nudged upward across our western counties in the FL Panhandle and SE Alabama for showers and storms that are making their way eastward. This activity is expected to wind down over the next couple hours as the environment to the east is increasingly hostile for prolonged convection.

SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM
(This Evening through next Tuesday)
Issued at 200 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

Shower and thunderstorm chances return late tonight through Friday, followed by a drying trend with building heat this weekend into early next week, before shower and thunderstorm chances return.

A complex of showers and storms will weaken as it approaches the region late tonight into Thursday morning. Higher PoPs late tonight into Thu morning across SE AL and the Eastern FL Panhandle, but the activity should be weakening as it moves into the region, with an absence of instability and shear.

Shortwave energy aloft and the seabreeze will force showers and thunderstorms on both Thursday and Friday. Activity may also linger into Thursday night. Instability and shear do not support severe weather, although a couple strong storms cannot be ruled out, with gusty winds being the main concern.

The subtropical ridge is modeled to build over the weekend into early next week with 500 mb heights increasing which will tend to dry us out. Daily shower/storm activity should become suppressed, with an increasing potential for advisory level heat.

A High Risk of Rip Currents will continue at the Bay, and Gulf County beaches into early tonight. Follow the advice of beach safety officials and heed the beach flags.

LONG TERM

AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 742 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

A decaying line of showers and storms is currently approaching ECP from the west, there is a chance it manages to impact ECP prior to dissipating. A PROB30 was introduced for this activity. Elsewhere VFR conditions are expected to prevail through tomorrow afternoon when the potential for showers and storms returns across all area terminals. MVFR to IFR conditions will be possible under any downpours.

MARINE
Issued at 200 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

Southwest winds will maximize within the seabreeze zone each afternoon and evening. Daily shower and thunderstorm chances will return on Thursday and Friday, with any storms having the potential for briefly higher winds and seas.

FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 200 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

A return to a wetter pattern on Thursday and Friday, with daily shower and thunderstorm chances before drying out again this weekend, when it will become increasingly hot again bringing Major heat impacts for those working outdoors. The sea breeze will make more inland progress on Thursday and Friday as well. There is a low potential of high dispersions on Friday.

HYDROLOGY
Issued at 200 PM EDT Wed Jun 24 2026

A Flood Warning is in effect for the Choctawhatchee River near Bruce (SR 20) with minor flooding forecast. Portions of the Ochlockonee, Apalachicola at Blountstown, Pea, and Chipola Rivers, and Spring Creek, are either in action stage or expected to reach action stage at this time.

Rainfall over the next week is forecast to be below average, given lower coverage of showers and storms this weekend as the subtropical ridge builds near the region.
