New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Tonight through Monday night)
Issued at 405 PM CST Sat Dec 2 2023
Very isolated showers are tapering out of the area along a front that is over the Atchafalaya basin and Gulf. The rest of the forecast will be rain free as a high pressure begins to move in the area late this weekend and into the work week.
Post front temperatures will be dropping tomorrow however the surge of cooler air will start to move into the area Sunday night.
Temperatures will fall below the climatological normals with MaxTs in the 60s and MinTs in the upper 30s to mid 40s overnight.
LONG TERM
(Tuesday through next Friday)
Issued at 405 PM CST Sat Dec 2 2023
Early Tuesday, a mid-level shortwave diving south out of Canada will carve out a deeper trough over the Appalachians through the mid- week. Meanwhile mid-level ridging will build over the Rockies, resulting in a dry NW flow aloft over the forecast area through the Tues/Wed time frame. At the surface, high pressure will be situated nearly directly overhead early Tuesday, while a cold front will be draped across the Ozarks. The northern stream shortwave will push the front south on Tuesday however, the boundary will become increasingly washed out as it approaches the Gulf Coast before eventually dissipating. In its wake, weak surface high pressure will traverse the SErn US through the later half of the week, allowing an onshore flow to become reestablished overhead by Thursday. This set up will bring about a rather benign and seasonal pattern through the bulk of the long term period. Tuesday through Thursday will consist of near zero rain chances, mostly sunny skies, and highs ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s.
With onshore flow becoming established on Thursday, moisture will begin to increase through the lower levels as we head towards the weekend. Dewpoints are forecasted to increase from the low 40s to low 50s on Thurs afternoon to the upper 50s to low 60s 24 hours later. As moisture returns, so do rain chances, with small POPs back in the forecast by the second half of Friday. However, any convection on Friday will likely remain fairly isolated with little synoptic support for convection available. Rain chances do however, begin to increase over the weekend as a mid-level cut off low/shortwave moves out of the Rockies and takes shape across the Plains, providing ample support for showers and thunderstorms through both Sat and Sun.
