NEAR TERM...
(Now through Monday Night)
Issued at 348 PM CDT Sun Oct 13 2024
A large upper-level trough is beginning to dig into the Great Lakes region. Throughout the period, this trough will evolve into a massive upper low that will become centered over southeast Canada. This will help to maintain a dry northwesterly flow aloft across the area. At the surface, a ridge of high pressure that extends from the western Atlantic into the northern Gulf has allowed for a light southwesterly flow to develop across the area.
This flow has given way to a rather warm day, with temperatures across the local area currently in the mid to upper 80s. With this light onshore flow continuing through tonight, expect a mild night with temperatures only dropping into the mid 60s inland and upper 60s to low 70s along the coast. For Monday, a cold front will begin to approach the area from the north. With a lack of deep layer moisture and subsidence in place due to the nearby high, not expecting any rain along or ahead of the front as it enters our area late Monday afternoon. Highs out ahead of the front (primarily south of Highway 84) will once again top out in the upper 80s. Lows Monday night will have quite the spread due to the progression of the front. Lows in our northernmost zones will dip into the low 50s while locations along the immediate coast will only drop into the mid to upper 60s. A Low Risk of rip currents will continue through the near term period. /96
LONG TERM...
(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 348 PM CDT Sun Oct 13 2024
The aforementioned upper low will begin to lift northeastward at the start of the period. As it lifts away, an embedded shortwave trough pushing within the western periphery of the low amplifies and quickly dives southeastward; its axis passing over our local region Tuesday night. Upper ridging then builds over the central US and expands eastward through the remainder of the period. At the surface, the cold front that passed overhead during the near term looks to stall just offshore Tuesday morning, potentially lifting back north during the day on Tuesday. This could allow for one more mild day with highs ranging from the mid 70s north to the low 80s south. As the upper shortwave passes overhead, it will help to send a much stronger cold front through the area Tuesday night. Strong high pressure builds in from the north in its wake, helping to advect in a much cooler and drier airmass into the area. Wednesday will be our coolest day with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s and lows dropping into the upper 30s to low 40s inland and mid to upper 40s closer to the coast. Temperatures will slowly moderate through the remainder of the period as winds begin to turn more easterly. /96
MARINE...
Issued at 348 PM CDT Sun Oct 13 2024
Light to occasionally moderate westerly to northwesterly flow is expected to become established tonight and linger through Monday night ahead of a cold front. A moderate to strong offshore flow will then develop Tuesday night through Thursday in the wake of the cold front. Small Craft Advisories will likely become necessary for midweek. /96
