NEAR TERM...
(Now through Friday night)
Issued at 437 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

A look at the geo-potential height fields this morning at 12Z shows a positive tilt upper trof axis positioned from the Upper Midwest to east of the Four Corners of the Desert Southwest. Ahead of the trof, a scattering of high based cirrus was streaming eastward over the Gulf coast. At the surface, the eastern nose of a strong arctic high pressure system was positioned over the Gulf coast. Plenty of sun has allowed temperatures to lift into the 40s which will continue to thaw us out, reducing the areal footprint of lingering snow from Tuesday's record snows. High pressure tracks east over the area to close out the week.

Lows are forecast to once again be cold, plunging to 18 to 22 over the interior to mid to upper 20s coast. Any lingering snow/ice melt on roads and bridges/overpasses that doesn't dry out this afternoon will once again re-freeze to a black ice hazard to driving.
Although wind is light tonight, wind chill values 20 to 25 will meet criteria for a cold weather advisory for southern portions of the area, southeast of I-65. The remainder of the area will be left out of the advisory as wind chills in the northwest zones, even though range 20 to 25, will need to be less than 20 to meet criteria for issuance there. Highs on Friday range in the mid to upper 40s and Lows Friday night look to be similar to tonight's numbers. Still a stretch of extended cold through the remainder of the week. /10

SHORT TERM...
(Saturday through Thursday)
Issued at 437 PM CST Thu Jan 23 2025

Much milder temperatures finally on the way during the extended period. Still a little cold, especially east of a Butler AL to Crestview FL line on Saturday night, where we will see one more night of subfreezing temperatures, but an overall warming trend is expected through the extended period. It will be dry through Saturday night into early Sunday, but rain chances return to the forecast area by Sunday afternoon through early Monday as a cold front moves into the area and stalls. Will be looking at chance PoPs through that period, with the best chance for rain being on Sunday night and early Monday, when we could be looking at 40-60 percent PoPs across the area. The weakly defined front will then linger across the area until Tuesday into Thursday, with mainly isolated to low end chance PoPs (mostly below 30 percent)
possible through that timeframe. The next real chance for more widespread precipitation then come late Thursday ahead of another approaching system. Temperatures will continue to moderate through the period with highs on Saturday in the low to mid 50s warming into the middle 60s by Thursday.

Temperatures still mainly in the upper 20s and lower 30s over most inland areas Saturday night but in the middle 40s or so down near the coast, but lows will then be in the 40s inland and in the lower 50s along the immediate coast Sunday and MOnday nights, before warming into the upper 40s inland and low to mid 50s closer to and along the coast by Wednesday night.
