New UPDATE

UPDATE
Issued at 926 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

For the latest NE FL and SE GA Daily Key Messages please visit: https:// www.weather.gov/media/jax/briefings/nws-jax-briefing.pdf

Today: Dry cold frontal passage pushing through the region today with Breezy Northwest winds increasing to around 15 mph with frequent gusts to 25 mph through the afternoon hours, a few peak wind gusts to 30 mph possible at times closer to the Atlantic Coast. Mostly sunny skies along with cooler than normal Max temps around 60F for most locations.

Tonight: Surface high pressure builds into the region from the NW and settles into South Georgia and the FL Panhandle/Big Bend region late tonight. This should result in Mostly Clear skies and North winds weakening to 5 mph or less (near calm) inland and lingering near 5-10 mph along the Atlantic Coastal areas and I-95 corridor from Jacksonville southward. This will result in low temps in the 32F-36F over all of SE GA away from the beaches, and most of inland NE FL along and West of the US 301 corridor. This should allow for widespread frost formation by sunrise Thursday morning and Frost Advisory has been posted for these locations from 3am to 9am Thursday. A few normally colder locations over inland areas may briefly drop into the 30-32F range and a brief light Freeze not out of the question and will be monitored for a short fuse Freeze Warning potential this evening. Closer to the Atlantic Coast with the North winds remaining in the 5-10 mph range, expect temps to bottom out in the upper 30s along the US-17 and I-95 corridor with patchy frost possible, while the Atlantic beaches should remain above 40F (lower 40s expected for most locations) along with morning wind chills down into the 30s.

NEAR TERM
Issued at 310 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

For the latest NE FL and SE GA Daily Key Messages please visit: https:// www.weather.gov/media/jax/briefings/nws-jax-briefing.pdf

Dry cold front will press down over the forecast area today from out of the north and continue southward over the Florida peninsula bringing colder temperatures, clear skies, and northwesterly winds through tonight and into Thursday morning.
Breezy winds will develop over the region following the fropa and then become more mild and variable later tonight. Cooler temperatures will be in place today with diurnal max temps rising into the lower 60s with overnight low temperatures dropping down into the 30s over inland areas and in the upper 40s and lower 50s along the coast. Potential for frost formation over inland area overnight and into early Thursday morning.

SHORT TERM
(Thursday through Friday night)
Issued at 310 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

Broad high pressure at the sfc and aloft will dominate the region on Thursday with clear skies. The cool airmass will linger over the area with below normal temps in the 60s, but full sun expected. Thursday night, the mean layer ridge will move off to the east with an upper level trough moving into the western Gulf.
This trough will be accompanied by increasing high clouds streaming in from the southwest. Temps not quite as cold as Thu morning as low level flow shifts to the southeast. Expecting temps in the upper 30s to lower 40s inland, and 45-50 deg north central FL and at the coastal areas. Friday, return low level flow from the southeast and south will advect moisture into the area, with flow aloft prevailing from the southwest brings additional mid to high clouds passing overhead. A few sprinkles possible, and isolated showers offshore waters are possible but generally dry conditions prevail, with a weak sfc trough near the coast pushing slowly northward. Highs in the 60s to lower 70s anticipated, with lows Friday night in the 50s.

LONG TERM
(Saturday through Tuesday)
Issued at 310 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

Weak sfc trough may still persist near the coast on Saturday, with small chance for a shower near the coast and offshore. A shower is possible but generally advertising 10-15 percent rain chances. Otherwise, flow just above the sfc will be south and be turning to the southwest ahead of an approaching mid to upper level trough. Considerable clouds expected with temps rising well into the 70s. Better rain chances Saturday night as moisture continues to increase and a strong cold front marches eastward from the MS Valley into the southeast states. GFS shows disturbance aloft ahead of the main trough that may bring in better dynamics for increased rain chance Saturday night but showing for now isolated to scattered coverage. Sunday, models continue to be a bit different with the frontal passage, with the GFS about 6-12 hours faster than than the ECMWF, similar to last night's 00z runs. The trend in the GFS has been to slow the front, which appears to be in the right direction. Otherwise, all models show precip with the front and so POPs continue to be nudged up a bit and advertising 60 - 80 percent. Instability still looks rather weak but line segments of showers and possible embedded storms are possible given strong low level forcing, with an isolated threat of strong gusty winds. The front should be moving eastward and moving offshore Sunday night with cooler and drier air moving in overnight as high pressure builds in from the west and northwest.

Monday, high pressure system to the northwest across GA and AL will shift east to northeast through Tuesday. Much cooler and dry air behind the front Monday through Tuesday, but the weekend will be above average ahead of the front. Gustier onshore winds expected Tuesday as the high shifts well to the north of the area.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 541 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

VFR conditions will prevail through the forecast period with breezy northwesterly winds developing today in conjunction with the dry frontal passage. Prevailing surface level winds will rise to about 10-14 knots with gusts rising to 20+ knots, with winds becoming more weaker in the evening and overnight hours.

MARINE
Issued at 310 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

A dry cold front will cross the local waters today, trailed by strong northwest winds with Small Craft Advisory conditions in place over the nearshore and outer waters. Winds and seas will begin to weaken later tonight as high pressure builds north of the local waters through Thursday. The high builds offshore of the southeast Atlantic coast on Friday. A cold front is forecast to move through area waters Sunday night.

Rip Current Risk: Moderate Risk for NE FL beaches today and Thursday.
Low Risk for SE GA beaches today and Thursday.

FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 310 AM EST Wed Dec 6 2023

Dry air and gusty northwest winds today with lowest RH values forecast to be in the upper 30s. Locally high dispersion just over 75 to the northeast of Waycross GA. Lighter winds on Thursday as high pressure builds into the area with much lower dispersion values in the poor range possible from Suwannee Valley area into inland southeast GA. Min RH values look lower Thursday aftn over inland Southeast GA down into the lower to mid 30 percent range.
