New DISCUSSION, FIRE WEATHER
KEY MESSAGES
- Warm and dry through the week with light southwest winds.
- Slight chance for showers and thunderstorms next weekend, mainly east of El Paso.
DISCUSSION
Issued at 245 AM MDT Mon Apr 21 2025
Current conditions this Monday morning show clear skies, light winds, and warmer temperatures. Scattered high cirrus over Arizona will progress over central New Mexico later today, so partly cloudy north of Las Cruces, but still mostly sunny along the International Border.
A welcomed shift in the weather pattern is expected this week away from the constant wind and dust we had last week. Lighter 500 mb flow and a consistent southwest direction will lead to very few day-to-day changes in the weather forecast today through the rest of the week. Lowland highs will top out in the lower-to-mid 80s each afternoon. Winds will be out of the southwest generally 10 to 15 mph, becoming light (almost calm) overnight. Dry weather each day with very little cloud coverage. Looks like a beautiful late-April week.
One thing to note is the development of the dryline boundary to our east this week. Southerly surface flow across South Texas will help better define this moisture boundary in the coming days. We should see a more consistent diurnal "sloshing" effect with the boundary seeping westward overnight and pushing back east due to the southwest BL flow each afternoon. Models are in good agreement that this moisture will remain to our east through the week, however a cold front increasing high pressure over the High Plains next weekend has the potential to push this moisture further west into our forecast area. Slight chance for showers and thunderstorms, primarily along and east of US-54 on Saturday would be our best chance locally. This depends solely on if the dryline can make it this far west, and that's a big IF. Low confidence in rain chances for El Paso or Alamogordo at this time.
AVIATION

Issued at 1120 PM MDT Sun Apr 20 2025
VFR conditions to persist at all terminals through the period.
A relaxed deep and dry west flow pattern will keep skies SKC, winds mostly light to moderate, often variable in direction. With lighter winds, no dust, with VSBY staying unrestricted.
FIRE WEATHER
Issued at 245 AM MDT Mon Apr 21 2025
Elevated fire danger expected through the week, with very few day to day changes. For Monday, light SSW winds 10 to 15 mph with Very Good ventilation this afternoon. Min RH 5 to 10%. Light southwest flow through the week will prevent the issuance of any further Red Flags, but very dry air will allow ERCs to quickly increase again after last week's precipitation and light mountain snow.
