SYNOPSIS
Showers will continue today from the coast to the mountains with the greatest coverage across San Diego County with less to the north. The showers will decrease from the northwest tonight and end early Friday. Then dry for Saturday into the middle of next week with a warming trend. Weak offshore flow at times may bring some locally gusty northeast winds near the coastal slopes of the mountains.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
Showers continue this afternoon, mostly in southern San Diego County. Rainfall totals have ranged from a few hundredths of an inch to over a half an inch across the San Diego County mountains.
Palomar Mountain remains the highest total so far at 0.83". It's a cool and cloudy day out there, with highs only in the mid 50s to low 60s west of the mountains, and in the 40s in the mountains.
Even the Coachella Valley and San Diego deserts are only in the mid 60s!
A weak low pressure system will continue progressing inland through California today, maintaining the scattered showers, and the cloudy and cool conditions through today.
Forecast rainfall totals for the rest of today:
Orange County and Inland Empire: 0.00 to 0.10 inch San Diego County coast: 0.05 to 0.10 inch San Diego County valleys: 0.10 to 0.25 inch San Bernardino County mountains: 0.05 to 0.10 inch San Diego and Riverside County mountains: 0.25 to 0.50 inch, highest on west facing slopes of the San Diego County mountains
The showers will decrease in coverage tonight as the low progresses east. Clouds will also clear out somewhat tonight, and it should be a cooler night compared to last night with clearer skies.
High pressure will begin building in from the southwest on Friday, bringing drier and warmer conditions this weekend and for much of next week. Weak offshore flow will kick up at times Saturday through Wednesday, with the strongest offshore flow occurring Monday into Tuesday. This is overall expected to be a weak Santa Ana wind event, with wind gusts generally less than 40 mph expected. As is typical with offshore flow, temperatures will warm up west of the mountains late this weekend into the middle of next week. The warmest days look to be Tuesday and Wednesday, with widespread upper 70s to low 80s in the valleys, and low to mid 70s along the coast.
Beyond the middle of next week, there is quite the spread in the ensembles on the timing and amplitude of a series of low pressure systems moving over the West. Minimally, we will see a cooling trend for the end of next week and next weekend, but how much cooling remains to be seen at this time. Any precipitation for the end of next week and into next weekend remains highly uncertain as well.
On a personal note, this is my last forecast shift and last forecast discussion at NWS San Diego. I will be moving on to NWS Headquarters next week for a new position, and moving to the DC area early next year. Even though I'm an East Coast girl, I have really enjoyed forecasting West Coast weather (only sometimes getting it right). From the many atmospheric rivers of the 2018/2019 and 2022/2023 winters, to the all the Santa Ana wind events and monsoon thunderstorms, to most recently Tropical Storm Hilary, it's been a fulfilling and fun 5 years for me.
