Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 316 PM EST Mon Dec 11 2023

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will build in for most of the week bringing cool and dry weather to the region. Rain chances could increase late in the period due to a possible storm system to the south.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/
High pressure will settle into the area tonight and Tuesday, resulting in mainly clear skies and light winds. Lows tonight will fall to the upper 20s to lower 30s. Highs Tuesday will reach the low to mid 50s.

SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/
Clear and cold through the period as surface high pressure drifts in from the north/northwest. Temperature guidance hasn't changed much with expected lows Wednesday in the lower 30s and a bit higher Thursday morning via more wind in the boundary layer. Highs both days in the lower to middle 50s.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/
No significant changes to the extended part of the forecast as it appears guidance is jogging a bit into better agreement. Although there are differences in the details, looking more like there could be a significant rain event for the last two days of the forecast. The ECMWF remains a bit to the east however.
No changes to the temperature forecast which moderates slowly in time.

AVIATION /20Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/
Overall expect VFR conditions at area terminals this TAF period with diminishing NW to N winds this afternoon becoming light overnight and turning toward the NNE by daybreak Tuesday. We may see Tempo MVFR cigs for another hour or two, particularly at ILM, before VFR completely sets in all areas.

Extended Outlook...VFR predominantly expected as high pressure dominates through the period.

MARINE
Through Tuesday: N winds 10 to 15 KT tonight will become N invof 10 KT Tuesday. Seas of 3 to 5 FT tonight will subside slightly to 3 to 4 FT Tuesday.

Tuesday Night through Saturday: Basically a northeast flow through the period. Speeds will be manageable early on but increase late Wednesday through Friday as another round of cold air advection commences. Small craft conditions are expected at a minimum and gale criteria early on is a possibility.
Significant seas will be 2-4 early on and increase to 3- 7 feet with the winds and drop back a bit late.
