SYNOPSIS
Dry and warmer weather is in store for this week as high pressure builds over the West Coast. High pressure and increased offshore flow will boost temperatures west of the mountains Wednesday through Saturday to 10 to 15 degrees above average. Onshore flow will begin to return this weekend with cooling spreading inland and with night and morning low clouds and fog returning to coastal areas around Sunday and Monday.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
At 1 PM, skies were mostly clear across SoCal, with the exception of some patchy cumulus development over the mountains.
Temperatures this afternoon are running 5 to upwards of 15 degrees warmer than this time yesterday, with the greatest increase in the mountains. Marine layer clouds will again be patchy at best tonight, and pretty much non-existent Tuesday night through Friday night.
High pressure will continue to ramp up over the West Coast on Tuesday, with a remnant low sticking around over Arizona and New Mexico for much of the next week. This will set us up into an offshore pressure gradient, with resultant Santa Ana winds over the mountains and valley foothills. The winds will start out quite weak on Tuesday, then strengthen a bit for Wednesday and Thursday. For now, it looks to be a mostly weak Santa Ana wind event.
As these winds push over the foothills of the valleys, the airmass will warm up and the offshore flow will greatly increase temperatures west of the mountains. High temperatures today and Tuesday will be well below average, by Wednesday we will be right around average, then well above average for the end of the week.
Temperatures in the valleys and inland coastal areas will reach well into the 90s, and even the immediate coast will get into the 80s Thursday through Saturday. This is about 10 to 15 degrees above average for those areas. With the offshore winds, warmer temperatures, and lower humidity, we could see some brief elevated fire weather conditions for later this week.
Though there remains differences in the models and ensembles, it appears that this high pressure will weaken and push inland as a stronger trough begins to take hold over the PacNW late this weekend into early next week. There are differences on the exact timing of this occurring, but it looks like we will begin to see some cooling around the Sunday or Monday timeframe with the return of onshore flow and marine layer clouds.
AVIATION
022025Z...Mostly clear early. Patchy and intermittent low clouds vcnty KSAN from 10-14Z tonight with bases around 2000 feet MSL and tops around 3000 feet MSL. Brief BKN low clouds possible.
Otherwise...clear this afternoon through tonight. Confidence in the timing and coverage of the low clouds as seen in the KSAN TAF is only low to moderate. Cumulus based at 9000 feet MSL over mountains til 01Z this afternoon.
MARINE
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Friday.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
