Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 701 AM EDT Mon Aug 3 2026
WHAT HAS CHANGED
Issued Coastal Hazard Message (CFW) for high rip risk for all beaches today. Also mentions strong south to north longshore current, all beaches except Brunswick county.
KEY MESSAGES
1) Unsettled weather pattern continues, with scattered to numerous showers and storms likely through at least midweek.
2) Hazardous marine conditions continue today.
DISCUSSION
KEY MESSAGE 1
Unsettled weather pattern continues, with scattered to numerous showers and storms likely through at least midweek.
Forecast for today not a whole lot different than yesterday's with scattered to numerous showers and storms. There will be breaks in the precip at times, but with high dewpoints and PWAT some locals will see heavy rain at times. Tough to pinpoint exact timing, but the general idea is for the rain to be focused near the coast and offshore this morning, transitioning to more inland this aftn in conjunction with daytime heating and an upr-level trough approaching from the west. Forecast does not shift much through midweek, with somewhat of a drying trend expected towards the end of the week as less mid-level energy traverses the area.
KEY MESSAGE 2
Hazardous marine conditions continue today.
A SCA remains in effect over all coastal waters until 8 PM EDT this evening. See the Marine section below for more details.
AVIATION /12Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
Expect periods of VFR/MVFR with some pockets of IFR stratus mainly inland. This will continue through the morning hours, with a moderate chance for low cigs and vsbys continuing into this aftn/evening in association with scattered showers/tstms.
Winds out of the SSW up to 10-12 kt, gusting at times this aftn.
Extended Forecast...Periodic sub-VFR restrictions will be possible in showers and thunderstorms through at least Wednesday. The moist low-level airmass will also support a greater potential for morning stratus each day. Widespread VFR might be due to return late week.
MARINE
A marginal SCA remains in effect over all coastal waters until 8 PM EDT this evening. Lower confidence in this over the SC coastal waters except out near 20 NM, with higher confidence in both 25 kt gusts and 6 ft seas over NC coastal waters. Sub-SCA conditions thereafter for the remainder of the week with S/SE flow as Bermuda high pressure is locked in place off to the east.
ILM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
NC...High Risk for Rip Currents through this evening for NCZ106-108-110.
SC...High Risk for Rip Currents through this evening for SCZ054-056.
MARINE...Small Craft Advisory until 8 PM EDT this evening for AMZ250- 252-254-256.
