SYNOPSIS
Warm conditions and offshore winds continue today before onshore flow and slight cooling develops tomorrow. Gusty winds in the mountains and desert slopes return on Thursday, with cooler temperatures and a rebuilding marine layer. This trend will be short-lived however, as warmer conditions and Santa Ana winds redevelop by late week.
DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...
At 1 PM, skies are mostly clear across Southern California.
Temperatures are quite a bit warmer than Monday afternoon across the coast, the western valleys and the lower deserts, where current temperatures have risen into the upper-70s to lower-80s.
Today will be the warmest day of the week as positive height anomalies peak over the region. The dominant ridge begins to break down and progress eastward overnight, becoming replaced by an amplified trough approaching the Pacific Northwest. Positive height anomalies remain but will be weaker, and winds will turn back onshore in the afternoon. This will promote cooler highs across the coast and valleys with highs in the 70s, and slightly warmer temperatures in the mountains and deserts, reaching the upper-50s to 60s in the mountains, approaching 70 degrees in the High Desert and approaching 80 degrees in the lower deserts.
The weakening upper-level low pushes through the Pacific Northwest on Thursday and quickly moves through the Great Basin on Friday.
For Southern California, highs will fall to near seasonal averages for the coast through the mountains, and slightly above normal in the deserts. Gusty onshore winds also increase on Thursday in the mountains and deserts, likely peaking Thursday night through Friday morning, when local gusts up to 55 mph will be possible along mountain crests and through wind-prone passes. In addition, the marine layer will briefly rebuild, with night and morning low clouds possible across the coast and valleys on Thursday and Friday.
The transient troughing pattern will rapidly be replaced by another building ridge across the western United States Friday afternoon into Saturday. Winds will turn offshore Friday morning or afternoon and strengthen. Winds initially will come from the north to northeast, favoring the strongest winds below the Cajon Pass and the Santa Ana mountains on Friday, before turning more easterly Friday night into Saturday, when the winds will strengthen farther south into the mountains of Riverside and San Diego Counties. The weakening trend of the ensembles continue this afternoon, and this event looks to be a weak to moderate event.
Winds likely remain offshore through the weekend, but the stronger winds will generally only occur in wind-prone areas.
Slow warming will occur on Friday and Saturday west of the mountains, as cold air advection leads to slight cooling in the mountains and deserts. More substantial warming develops on Sunday, when highs will range 4-10 degrees above seasonal averages region-wide, and little change is expected through early next week.
AVIATION
052110Z...FEW high clouds will continue through tonight. Confidence is low to moderate on BKN low cloud 600-900 ft MSL and patchy fog development (30-40% chance) along coast and VCTY KSAN after 08Z Wednesday. If cigs appear, vis near 5sm expected with clearing 15- 17Z Wed.
Gusty northerly wind gusts 20-30 knots through and below passes through 00Z Wed, leading to locally weak to MDT up/downdrafts. Winds will weaken overnight but south and west winds nearing 20-30 knots will occur along mountain desert slopes after 19Z Wed.
MARINE
Northwest winds gusting near 20 knots near San Clemente Island Thursday night and Friday morning. Otherwise, no hazardous marine weather conditions are expected for the rest of this week into the weekend.
BEACHES
A long-period swell from the west northwest will bring elevated surf late Wednesday into Friday. Highest surf is expected on Thursday, mainly on west-facing beaches of San Diego County. Confidence is increasing that wave heights will range from 3 to 6 feet for most areas with sets to 7 feet in southern San Diego County. Please see the latest Beach Hazards Statement (CFWSGX) for more information.
SKYWARN
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
