Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 128 PM PST Fri Dec 8 2023

SYNOPSIS
High pressure building over the Great Basin will bring sunny days, clear nights and gusty northeast Santa Ana winds in the mountains, foothills, and valleys. The strongest winds will be on Saturday, but the warmest day will be Sunday, as winds slowly weaken. Fair and dry weather continues next week, with slight cooling Monday into Tuesday.

DISCUSSION
FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

There were some thin, high clouds drifting SE over SoCal this afternoon, but skies were sunny. Even the coastal waters were free of marine clouds. The sfc pressure gradients were trending offshore, and that was evident over northern parts of the forecast area, where strongest winds were NNW-NE at 20-30 MPH. Farther south, it was predominantly onshore winds and temperatures in the 60s.

Strong high pressure building into the Great Basin will force strong and gusty Santa Ana winds below the passes and wind-prone canyons along the coastal slopes tonight through Sunday. Strongest winds are expected below the Cajon Pass and in the Santa Ana Mountain canyons.
Wind Advisories are now in effect for most inland areas, aside from the deserts.

The offshore gradient will weaken after Sunday morning, setting up slight cooling west of the mountains, but continued fair and dry weather. Another offshore push is slated for the middle of next week, but looks weaker than the one this weekend. That will continue the fair, dry, and mild conditions through next week.

A ridge of high pressure near the West Coast is controlling our weather. We will have several minor waves moving off the Pacific and through the ridge, modulating our winds and temperatures at times, but the overall pattern through next week remains offshore, with fair, dry, and warm afternoons. Nights will be cold in those wind- sheltered valleys, with large diurnal swings in temperature each day. Given how weak the winds appear for the second half of next week, there is a chance for marine air to make some inroads along the coast in a shallow layer. If this happens, the chance for coastal fog will return, starting about Wednesday.

If you are looking for rain, the ensembles of the CMC/GFS/ECMWF are all flocking around mid month. That means after next week, we begin to see the first decent chances for getting wet.

AVIATION

Coast/Valleys
Mostly clear skies will prevail through this evening. Gusty northeast winds will develop in some valley locations after 06Z Sat with local sfc gusts 30-45 knots. There is a 12 percent chance of winds greater than 30 kt at KONT 12-20Z Sat.
Strongest winds will occur below the Cajon Pass and the San Gorgonio Pass into the Inland Empire. Areas of mdt up/downdrafts and LLWS expected. Winds will gradually weaken after 21Z Sat through 21Z Sun.

Mountains/Coastal Foothills...Northeast winds will develop after 00Z Sat over ridges, coastal mountain slopes, and coastal foothills with initial gusts 20-30 knots. Winds strengthening to gusts 50-60 knots after 06Z Sat. Winds will gradually weaken after 21Z Sat through 21Z Sun. Areas of mdt up/downdrafts and LLWS expected.

Deserts...Mostly clear skies through Sat.

MARINE
Isolated northeast wind gusts to 20 knots, mainly off the northern San Diego County coast and off the coast near the Mexican border, will occur at times tonight into Sunday morning.

BEACHES
The long period WNW swell will continue to decrease through this evening, though some sets to 6 feet will continue, especially in southern San Diego County.

FIRE WEATHER
...Red Flag Warning will be in effect beginning 8 AM on Saturday morning, and running through Sunday afternoon for the Inland Empire...

Strong and gusty northeasterly winds will develop tonight and peak in strength on Saturday morning. Strongest winds will be below the Cajon Pass, and near Fremont Canyon, where a few gusts of 65 MPH or more are possible. Elsewhere, in the Inland Empire and along the coastal slopes of the mountains in wind-prone areas, east to northeast winds will be 30 to 40 MPH, with peak gusts 50 to 55 MPH from early Saturday morning, through Sunday morning. Minimum RH values will fall to around ten percent by Saturday afternoon, and again on Sunday afternoon, with poor overnight recovery. This will create areas of elevated, to critical fire weather conditions at times in the valleys. Due to drier conditions at lower elevations north of San Diego County, more widespread critical fire conditions are expected in the Inland Empire.

Winds will remain in the 25-35 MPH range with peak gusts in the Santa Ana wind-prone areas of 50-60 MPH through Sunday morning, then weaken later in the day. Widespread RH values on Sunday will once again fall to around ten percent away from the coast.

Light winds are expected on Monday and Tuesday, allowing some moderation in relative humidity and cooling west of the mountains.
