Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 520 PM PDT Fri Nov 1 2024
SYNOPSIS
01/153 PM.
Saturday a weak storm system will yield cooler temperatures and a chance of light rain showers, especially for the Central Coast.
Gusty northerly winds will impact the mountains and southern Santa Barbara County Saturday night. Sunday into late next week, Santa Ana Winds and fire weather conditions are likely. The northeasterly winds will be strongest on Monday and Wednesday.
.SHORT TERM (FRI-MON)...01/250 PM.
This weekend no significant rainfall or flooding impacts are anticipated. As a result late tonight through Saturday, a dying front will travel across the region, starting with northwestern San Luis Obispo County. This front will bring cooler temperatures (largely below 70 degrees) and a chance of showers. Rain chances are likely to start Saturday morning for the Central Coast and Santa Barbara County, with a slight chance of showers extending south to Ventura and Los Angeles Counties Saturday afternoon and evening. Storm total rainfall of up to a quarter inch is expected for north facing slopes, especially for San Luis Obispo County.
Elsewhere, if any rain does fall, there is high confidence in totals under a tenth of an inch. Most showers will clear out by Sunday, expect precipitation may linger into Sunday morning for the northern slopes of Ventura County Mountains. There is high confidence that snow levels will bottom out at around 6000 feet, thus snow will be confined to the highest peaks.
This evening gusty northwesterly winds will impact the Southwestern Santa Barbara County Coast, with gusts of 30 to 50 mph expected, and a Wind Advisory is in effect starting at 6 PM this evening. The northerly wind gusts will extend eastward Saturday evening, with gusts up to 60 mph to impact both the western and eastern portions of the Santa Ynez Range. Saturday night gusts may even reach favorable foothill locations of the south coast, such as Montecito Hills. A Wind Advisory may be issued in the future.
As a result of the storm system taking a more inland and drier trajectory, gusty wind and associated fire weather impacts are anticipated. Gusty northerly winds Saturday night will shift to northeasterly on Sunday. By Monday, a moderate-to- strong Santa Ana wind event will impact wind prone corridors. These winds will drive significant fire weather conditions late Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Please see the Fire Weather Discussion for more details.
Starting Sunday, as 500 mb heights trend upwards and the flow trends offshore, temperatures will increase a few degrees each day. Offshore flow will keep clouds at bay, making way for sunny skies. By Monday, highs in the 70s will be widespread. However, as a result of the relatively cool airmass aloft, clear skies, and low moisture, low temperatures Sunday and Monday morning will approach freezing for many desert and valley locations.
.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...01/302 PM.
Tuesday morning some marine layer clouds may be return, and the day will offer some reprieve from the gusty winds. However fire weather conditions will remain elevated.
Then Wednesday, there is the potential for a significant insider slider trough to impact the region. If this pattern materializes, Wednesay and Thursday may see a very significant strong Santa Ana Wind event with critical fire weather conditions, that will focused on LA and Ventura Counties. Please see the Fire Weather Discussion for more details.
The later portion of the week will likely be warm and dry with sunny skies. Santa Ana winds are likely to impact mountain, deserts, and valley locations along the usual cooridor. Breezy conditions have the potential to extend well into the Ventura County valleys/coasts, the San Fernando Valley, and the San Gabriel valley foothills.
AVIATION
02/0017Z.
At 00Z at KLAX, there was no marine layer nor an inversion.
Moderate confidence in TAFs. MVFR/IFR cigs/vsbys to develop at coastal sites tonight, propogating towards inland sites lasting through Saturday afternoon. Expect light precipitation chances for KPRB, KSBP, and KSMX from 09z-17z. Arrival times of cigs could vary +/- 2 hours.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 40% chance for OVC009-OVC020 cigs and/or 1SM-3SM vsbys to develop 12Z-18Z Saturday. There is a 40% chance for an east-wind component to reach 8 kt 06Z-17Z Saturday.
KBUR...High confidence in TAF.
MARINE
01/230 PM.
Multiple episodes of hazardous winds and seas are expected through next week. Long durations of at least Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conditions will affect the waters. The most dangerous conditions are expected Saturday night into Sunday as a cold front spreads over the coastal waters, and this includes Gale-Force Winds over the Outer Waters. Large, steep seas will continue across the Outer Waters through next week, and will potentially spread into the Santa Barbara Channel and into the nearshore waters at times -- especially Saturday night into Sunday and during the middle of next week.
For the Outer Waters, SCAs continue through early Saturday evening, before a GALE WARNING goes into effect continuing through Sunday afternoon. The strongest winds are expected over western areas. Conditions are forecast to briefly fall below SCA thresholds late tonight through Saturday morning in PZZ670. Outer Waters Gales will likely be followed by SCA winds and/or seas continuing through next week (80% chance), and wave heights could reach the 15-20 ft range during the middle of next week -- highest north.
For the Inner Waters along the Central Coast, SCA conditions are expected through this evening before briefly tapering off. Then there is a greater than 95% chance for additional SCAs to become required beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday, with the strongest winds just offshore of Pt. San Luis.
While winds are forecast to decrease for early next week, SCA seas may continue.
For the southern inner waters, aside from SCA conditions through this evening in the Santa Barbara Channel, SCA conditions are unlikely through early Saturday afternoon. SCA conditions then are forecast to re-develop later Saturday afternoon and then continue into Sunday. There is a 40% chance for Gale Force Winds across the Santa Barbara Channel Saturday night.
BEACHES
01/230 PM.
High Surf Advisories from large northwesterly swell will continue along the Central Coast into tonight. The highest surf, up to 11 ft, is expected for NW-facing beaches, while SW-facing beaches may still see breaking waves up to 8 ft. In addition, there is a 50-80% chance that additional High Surf Advisories become necessary along the Central Coast through this weekend and next week, with the time-frame of highest confidence being Sunday through Tuesday night. Very minor nuisance flooding will also be possible along the Central Coast from Sunday night into next week.
Elevated surf may also extend across the Ventura County Coast this weekend into next week, potentially warranting the issuance of a Beach Hazards Statement (50% chance).
FIRE WEATHER
01/336 PM.
A low pressure system is now taking a more inland track, resulting in reduced chances of rain on Saturday. As a result, any rainfall accumulation that does fall is expected to be less than 0.10 inches with some areas possibly not receiving any rainfall south of Point Conception. Behind this system, there will be strengthening northwest winds on Saturday night, but humidity levels will remain elevated. By Sunday, gusty northerly winds will bring a drying trend, with elevated fire weather conditions across southern Santa Barbara county by afternoon and evening as humidity levels lower to between 15 and 25 percent.
The eastern portion of the Santa Ynez range and adjacent foothills along with the Highway 33 corridor in Ventura county will be especially susceptible to elevated fire weather conditions Sunday afternoon into evening.
By Sunday night and Monday, a Santa Ana wind event will potentially bring critical fire weather conditions to wind prone mountain and valley areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, resulting in the issuance of the Fire Weather Watch for portions of the mountains and valleys. The strongest Santa Ana winds are expected to be focused across the LA county mountains with locally damaging gusts up to 60 mph possible. Remaining mountain and valley areas in the Fire Weather Watch are expected to have Santa Ana winds gusting in the 30 to 50 mph range, strongest across higher terrain (such as Santa Monicas and Santa Susanas) as well as the Highway 118 corridor. Humidity levels between 15 and 25 percent are expected to be common with this event, locally falling to between 10 and 15 percent on Monday. A potentially stronger, more widespread, and longer duration Santa Ana wind event could bring widespread critical fire weather conditions to wind prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties Wednesday into Thursday.
