SYNOPSIS
09/514 AM.
Moderate to strong Santa Ana winds will continue across Ventura County and northwestern Los Angeles County into this afternoon.
Damaging wind gusts are expected in the wind-prone locations.
Winds will diminish some late today, but remain gusty at times through Sunday morning. It will be mostly clear through Sunday, with a warming trend. Tonight will be quite cold in wind sheltered interior locations, with hard freezes likely in the Antelope Valley. Offshore flow is expected much of next week, with moderate to possibly strong Santa Ana winds again by midweek.
.SHORT TERM (TDY-MON)...09/519 AM.
Offshore pressure gradients continued to strengthen early this evening as surface high pressure builds into the Great Basin. The gradient between KLAX and KDAG gradient was over 6 mb offshore at 3 AM PST, a 7 mb change during the past 24 hours. N-S gradients between KLAX and KBFL and KSBA and KBFL gradients were -7.0 mb and 6.4 mb respectively. While those are still strong, they have begun to weaken, and the low level flow was in the process of shifting to a more northeasterly direction. Across SBA and SLO Counties, winds have mostly dropped below advisory levels, except in the Santa Lucia Mtns, where advisory level winds are expected to continue through mid or late morning.
Meanwhile, across L.A. and Ventura Counties, north to northeast winds were on the increase. Gusts to near or above 60 mph have already occurred in the mtns of L.A. County and in the Santa Susana Range. With steepening offshore gradients, moderate upper level support, and cold advection heading toward the typical diurnal peak of Santa Ana winds, expect winds to continue to increase through sunrise to the mid morning hours, with damaging wind gusts to 60 mph becoming more widespread. There will likely be some gusts over 70 mph in the windiest locations in the L.A.
County mtns, the Santa Susana Mountains, and in the western Santa Monica mountains.
High Wind Warnings are in effect in the western and central mountains of L.A. County, the Santa Clarita Valley, the western San Fernando Valley, the western Santa Monica mountains, the Agoura Hills-Calabasas area, the Malibu coast, and coastal and valley areas of Ventura County. Wind advisories are in effect around the edges of this warning, for the Ventura County mountains, the eastern mtns of L.A. County, the western Antelope Valley foothills, the eastern San Fernando Valley, and the eastern Santa Monica mountains. Winds are expected to drop below warning levels in most areas during the early to mid afternoon hours.
However, gradients will remain strongly offshore tonight and Sun morning, and although upper support will weaken, it appears that advisory level winds will continue in most of these locations through about noon Sunday. For locations in L.A./VTU Counties currently under Wind Advisories, have extended these advisories through noon Sunday, though winds may drop below advisory levels for a while late this afternoon and evening. For locations under High Wind Warnings, Wind Advisories will most likely be needed once the warnings expire this afternoon, with advisory level winds continuing through noon or so Sun.
Except for some low clouds across interior sections of southeastern SLO County, northeastern SBA County and the northern Ventura County mountains through mid morning, today will be sunny.
Skies will be mostly clear tonight and Sun. In response to an upper ridge amplifying in the eastern Pacific, heights across the forecast area will begin to rise today, and max temps will likely be up a few degrees from those on Fri. Warming is expected to be greatest across the coastal plain, where compressional warming due to downslope winds should provide some extra assistance in boosting temps. Max temps should be a few degrees above normal in coastal areas, close to normal in the valleys and below normal in the mtns and in the Antelope Valley.
It will be a very chilly tonight in wind sheltered locations across the interior, where frosts or light freezes are possible.
In the Antelope Valley, the combination of cold air settling over the area today, very low dew points and diminishing winds tonight will likely make for a very cold night, and temps could drop to between 18 and 23 degrees in the colder parts of the Antelope Valley. Have issued a Hard Freeze Warning for the Antelope Valley for late tonight and early Sun. Any tender vegetation which has survived so far this season will be in more danger tonight.
The upper ridge will move over the area on Sun. It should be mostly sunny Sunday, though some high clouds may filter into western and northern areas during the afternoon once the ridge axis moves through. Max temps should be up a few more degrees in most areas Sunday, generally to above normal levels. Winds should be below advisory levels just about everywhere by afternoon.
A weak and broad trough will move into CA Sun night and Mon, causing heights to fall. A band of high clouds will probably be thick enough to make skies mostly cloudy late Sun night and Mon morning. This should keep Sun night from being as cold as tonight in most interior areas. Gradients will still be moderate offshore Sun night/early Mon, so there may be some locally gusty NE winds in the mtns and valleys of L.A./VTU Counties. However, winds should remain below advisory levels. The max temp forecast for Mon will be tricky. While heights and thicknesses will fall, flow will start out offshore in the morning. Temps may rise rather quickly in the morning, with max temps probably still above normal in most areas. However, expect some cooling, especially on the coastal plain, with cooling more pronounced in the afternoon as weakening offshore grads allow stronger seabreezes to develop.
.LONG TERM (TUE-FRI)...09/513 AM.
Deterministic runs of the GFS and EC show continue to show a fairly strong shortwave dropping southward thru the Pac NW and into the Great Basin Mon night/Tue, with an upper low developing over Utah. The two deterministic model runs begin to show some differences with the position of the upper low for Wed, with the GFS showing it dropping into Arizona, and the EC keeping it in Utah. However, both models do show a tightening of the upper height pattern across the region on Wed. Low level offshore flow will likely continue across the region Tue through Fri, with gusty north to northeast winds at times. An increase in winds aloft with the tightening height pattern and some low level cold advection may support strengthening of the offshore flow Wed, causing an uptick in wind speeds across the area.
The upper low will move eastward Thu and an upper ridge will move into CA. This ridge will linger into Fri. This should maintain dry conditions through Fri, with max temps slightly above normal Wed through Fri. A peek ahead suggests that a trough moving through the Pacific could bring some rain to the area next weekend, especially if the operational run of the EC is correct.
