Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 113 AM EDT Fri Apr 18 2025
SYNOPSIS
High pressure will move offshore by Friday, leading to a significant warming trend for the weekend. Rain chances increase towards the middle of next week with the next frontal system.
UPDATE
6z aviation discussion below.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/
Quiet and seasonable tonight as high pressure to our north progresses eastward. Mid level ridging pokes in from the southwest on Friday and the surface high will be off the coast. This will lead to an increase in both temperatures and dewpoint.
SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/
Pretty quiet weather through this period. Offshore high pressure keeps lighter SSW flow around, while ridging aloft builds and warms up the airmass in place. Look for a lovely Saturday, with highs in the upper 80s inland, upper 70s at the coast. Water temperatures hang around in the lower 60s, which will help push a healthy seabreeze circulation inland. Lows Friday night in the upper 50s, becoming the lower 60s by Saturday night.
LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
Upper low in the Plains picks up and moves northeastward into the Great Lakes region Sunday and Monday. Some of the shortwave energy moves a bit closer to the area, but the majority of it looks to be well to the north. Look for an increase in cloud cover Sunday and Monday, but no rain chances in play. Highs each day well in the 80s, lows in the lower 60s.
Frontal system approaches and stalls near the area Tuesday through Thursday, where modest shower and thunderstorm chances show back up again. Low temperatures remain about the same, while highs should be 2-3 degrees cooler.
AVIATION /05Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
High confidence VFR through 6z TAF period. Really shallow moist layer is present across coastal areas, including KILM, KCRE, and KMYR, but with abundant dry air right above it, it will be tough for anything more than ground fog to develop before this morning. Therefore have removed low vsbys from ILM TAFs. Mostly clear skies with a few diurnal cumulus this afternoon. Calm winds through morning become southerly after daybreak, with gusts near 20 kts this afternoon.
Extended Outlook...High confidence in VFR daytime Friday through the weekend. Increasing rain chances could bring restrictions early next week.
MARINE
Through Friday...High pressure centered north of the area will progress eastward through the period. This will favor very light winds that will veer only slightly from SW to S. With no appreciable swell the only seas will be the diminutive wind chop.
Friday Night through Tuesday...Very persistent conditions through the extended marine forecast period. Winds remain out of the SSW at 10-15 kts, with seas hanging in at 2-3 ft. South to southeast swell to have long periods at 7-9 seconds.
