KEY MESSAGES
1. High temperatures will remain well above seasonal values through Saturday.
2. A slight cooling trend is expected to take place beginning this weekend.
3. A few strong thunderstorms are possible in the Sierra Nevada each afternoon through Wednesday and again next weekend.
DISCUSSION
Temperatures in the San Joaquin Valley reached the mid-90s yesterday afternoon, and those above average temperatures will continue through Saturday as the low pressure system currently sitting over Southern California begins progressing eastward.
These temperatures are roughly 10 degrees above normal for this time of year, so we are getting a taste of summer early this year. Here are probabilities for certain San Joaquin Valley cities reaching 90 degrees as a high temperature later this afternoon: Bakersfield: 36% Fresno: 61% Hanford: 46% Lemoore: 56% Madera: 31% Merced: 31% Porterville: 16% Visalia: 51%
As this low pressure system progresses eastward and tracks over Oklahoma on Friday, zonal flow will take its place, cooling temperatures over the weekend. Temperatures will cool back down to near normal by Monday.
Additionally, there is a chance for afternoon and evening mountain thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada later today.
Convective available potential energy is modestly good over the Sierra mountains, with some values above 1,000 J/kg. Main threats with these storms are: localized heavy rainfall, cloud to ground lightning, pea sized hail, and wind gusts near 45 mph.
These values are supported for tomorrow afternoon and evening as well before dropping for a few days. The aforementioned zonal flow along with a few embedded shortwave troughs will bring the thunderstorm chances back through the weekend.
AVIATION
Apart from localized MVFR due to Sierra thunderstorms from 19Z through 03Z, VFR conditions will prevail over Central California for the next 24 hours.
