New AVIATION

SHORT TERM
(Today through Sunday Night)
Issued at 353 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024

The morning weather map featured a nearly stationary boundary draped across far NE AR with a remnant MCV paralleling just S of this front (drifting towards the NW). Aloft, weak counterclockwise steering flow was in place regionally around an area of upper low pressure situated over Ern OK and NErn TX. This upper low will provide lingering PoP chances through Sunday afternoon before this feature lifts to the NE and drier weather returns with the approach of upper level ridging.

Forecasted PWATs this morning into the afternoon are expected to range from 1.75-2.25 inches across the SE two thirds of AR which puts PWATs in the top 75th-90th percentile for this time of year; meaning an environment favorable of high precipitation rates and storms producing efficient rainfall. Morning WSR-88D radars depicts an area of showers ongoing over S and SE AR, drifting slowly Nwrd, and a second area of showers/storms ongoing in proximity of the MCV. Pre-dawn temperatures were mainly in the low to mid 70s.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected again today, with better statewide coverage compared to the previous couple of days. For locations of N-Cntrl into NE AR, rainfall amounts of more than 2 inches are possible along and near the track of the MCV. Therefore these are the locations that will be monitored closely for flash flooding concerns. Elsewhere, beneficial rain should be welcomed. Temperatures today will be pleasant, with highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s. Temperatures will begin to moderate as soon as Sunday as more sunshine returns.

LONG TERM
(Monday through Friday)
Issued at 353 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024

Ridge of high pressure will begin building over Arkansas from the Plains Monday, and will stick around for a few days. Seasonal temperatures will be in place to start the period, along with lingering chances of showers/thunderstorms in eastern Arkansas.
However, the heat will crank up in the days to follow, and any precipitation will be isolated.

Starting Tuesday/Wednesday, warmer than average temperatures are in the forecast, with afternoon readings well into the 90s. Heat index values will be in the triple digits, and could top 105 degrees in much of Arkansas except the Ozark/Ouachita Mountains. Heat headlines will likely be required.

As the period comes to an end, it appears the ridge will retrograde toward the Rockies. That will allow a cold front to head this way from the north. The front will arrive late Friday or just beyond the period, and will bring at least small chances of rain and conditions that are a little less oppressive.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 631 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024

Mix of MVFR/IFR conds were ongoing this morning due to low stratus, CIGs should gradually improve through the day today.
Scattered SHRA/TSRA are expected with activity winding down somewhat after sunset. Winds will be out of the S/SE at 10 kts or less. Low stratus is expected to return once again Sat night.
