KEY MESSAGES
Issued at 239 AM CST Wed Feb 19 2025

-Dangerously cold wind chills expected through Thursday morning.

-Light snow flurries persist across the panhandles this morning with little to no further accumulations of snow.

SHORT TERM
(Today through Thursday night)
Issued at 239 AM CST Wed Feb 19 2025

The arctic airmass remains fully entrenched across the southern plains, including the panhandles, through Thursday. This arctic airmass is causing the extremely cold temperatures that currently plague the panhandles. For almost all the panhandles the temperatures will not go above freezing for either today or Thursday. In fact these extremely cold temperatures are up to 40 degrees below seasonable normals. That means the expected highs in the teens to 20s today may set daily cold temperature records.
Even with relatively weak winds the apparent temperatures are down to the negative 20s this morning. These cold apparent temperatures have a moderate to high chance to repeat for Thursday morning as well. As such the Extreme Cold Warning has been extended to cover Thursday as well as today. So make sure you bundle up as these temperatures can rapidly cause hypothermia and frostbite. Make sure your pets and animals have somewhere warm as well less they freeze to death. Lastly these cold temperatures are still squeezing out light snow flurries across the panhandles this morning with minimal accumulations of very fine snow.

LONG TERM
(Friday through Tuesday)
Issued at 239 AM CST Wed Feb 19 2025

Friday all the way into next work week is more likely than not to be a period of dry weather as little to no moisture manages to makes it way to the southern plains. So while a weather system has a moderate chance of forming and moving across the southern plains on Friday and Saturday it is only capable of causing a shift in the winds. It just so happens that the wind shift associated with this system is likely to bring in warmer air the panhandles. This will see the panhandles undergo a quick warmup through the weekend that will see the highs in the 60s by Sunday. This is a massive increase in temperatures compared to the earlier arctic airmass extreme cold. Once we go into next work week it seems likely that the temperatures will continue to increase with highs breaching the 70s. So the long term just looks to be a shift from deep winter to a warm spring in the span of a few days.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 454 AM CST Wed Feb 19 2025

A low level stratus deck continues to sit across the panhandles causing MVFR to IFR conditions at all terminals. This cloud deck has a moderate to high chance of scattering out during the late morning hours which would herald the return of VFR conditions.
Conversely if the opposite occurs the cloud deck would thin but remain as a MVFR to IFR cloud deck through the rest of the day.
Heavy rime icing has been reported within this cloud deck. Light snow flurries continue to occur under the cloud deck leading to some reductions to visibilities that can reach MVFR levels.
