Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Morristown TN 251 PM EDT Sat Sep 7 2024

New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM

SHORT TERM
(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 248 PM EDT Sat Sep 7 2024

Key Messages:

1. Dry and cooler through Sunday for an early fall feel.

Discussion:

We will be under an upper level eastern CONUS trough with cool surface high pressure building in from the northwest. This will provide a dry short term period with a mostly clear night and plenty of sunshine Sunday. Relative humidity values Sunday afternoon will be quite low. Temperatures will run below normal especially tonight, when temperatures will drop enough to make a run at some record lows, with the records at Tri-CIties and Oak Ridge expected to be the most threatened.

Daily Record Low Minimum Temperatures

Date Chattanooga Knoxville Tri-Cities Oak Ridge 09-08 52(2017) 46(1984) 44(2017) 49(2017)

LONG TERM
(Sunday night through next Saturday)
Issued at 248 PM EDT Sat Sep 7 2024

Key Messages:

1. Dry conditions, gradual warming trend, and low afternoon relative humidity through at least mid-week.

Discussion:

Main weather story is building surface ridge into the southern Appalachians for early part of the week. Dry airmass and mixing will allow for afternoon relative humidity to drop into the upper 20s and 30s through Wednesday. Due to rising heights, a gradual warmup is anticipated through mid-week. Dry airmass will allow for relative large diurnal temperature swings.

For the latter half of the week, GEFS and GEPS clusters show upper ridging developing over the far southeast. Deterministic models especially the GFS is showing an upper trough over the mid Mississippi Valley pulling showers back into the Tennessee valley.
Confidence is low on this solution and prefer the low chance PoPs.
Temperatures will return to more seasonal levels.

AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1243 PM EDT Sat Sep 7 2024
