SYNOPSIS
Dense fog will develop in most of the San Joaquin Valley early this morning. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees are expected in rural areas of the San Joaquin Valley each night and early morning today into Wednesday morning. A warming trend is anticipated Wednesday through at least Friday. Dry weather will persist into next weekend.

DISCUSSION
Visibilities in the San Joaquin Valley this morning will vary from 800 feet to as low as 200 feet in dense fog. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 10 AM PST this morning. If driving, slow down, use low beam headlights, and keep plenty of distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Highways affected include, but are not limited to Highway 99, Highway 198, Highway 180, Highway 41, Highway 43, and Interstate 5 south of Kettleman City. Areas of fog may develop in the San Joaquin Valley tonight. The High Resolution Ensemble Forecast guidance depicts a moderate probability (30-40 percent) of this fog becoming dense.

A ridge of high pressure will build over the Western United States today and tonight. This ridge of high pressure will progress eastward Sunday. A trough of low pressure will move eastward across the Pacific Northwest Sunday night. This trough of low pressure will deepen over the Great Basin Monday and Monday night.
An area of low pressure aloft may develop in the base of the trough Tuesday. This cyclone aloft will remain in place over the Great Basin Wednesday, before progressing eastward Thursday and Friday as high pressure builds over the Golden State. Dry weather will persist throughout Central California for at least the next seven days.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28 degrees are anticipated in rural areas of the San Joaquin Valley each night and early morning today into Wednesday morning. A Freeze Warning is in effect until 8 AM PST Wednesday morning. Here are probabilities of minimum temperatures of 32 degrees or lower for select locations in the San Joaquin Valley on Sunday, December 10th, 2023:

Visalia - 69% Hanford - 69% Delano - 69% Madera - 64% Lemoore - 64% Merced - 49% Porterville - 14%

Seasonal temperatures are expected this afternoon. High temperatures each afternoon Sunday through Tuesday will be two to four degrees above normal for this time of year. A warming trend is expected Wednesday through at least Friday. By Friday afternoon, maximum temperatures will be around ten degrees above their typical values for the middle of December.

AVIATION
LIFR conditions expected in most of the San Joaquin Valley until 18Z this morning due to dense fog. VFR conditions will prevail across Central California this afternoon and this evening. IFR or lower conditions are possible in the San Joaqin Valley tonight due to mist and fog.

AIR QUALITY ISSUES
On Saturday, December 9th, 2023, fireplace/wood stove burning status is: no burning unless registered in Fresno, Kern, Madera, and Tulare Counties. Burning discouraged in Kings and Merced Counties, as well as in and Kern (Greater Frazier Park Area) and Sequoia National Park and Forest.
