Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 110 AM PST Sun Dec 10 2023

SYNOPSIS
Considerable high clouds will move through a ridge of high pressure over the western states today through Monday.
Temperatures will climb several degrees early this week then a trough will dig over the Desert Southwest Tuesday and Wednesday with north winds returning to our region.

SHORT TERM
Today and tonight.

Recent IR satellite loops showed a broad swath of high level moisture spreading over the western states associated with an atmospheric river directed into the Pacific Northwest. This high level moisture will move through the ridge overhead and result in considerable cloud cover later today and tonight. Lingering north breezes 15-25 mph will be confined near Laughlin-Bullhead City while the rest of the region can expected light winds today. Temps will increase 8-10 degrees today over our northern zones from Bishop to Caliente. The Mojave Desert region can expect highs 2-3 degrees higher than Saturday. Lows tonight will be up several degrees under the blanket of high clouds.

LONG TERM
Monday through Saturday.

Several disturbances coming into the West early Monday will eventually consolidate into a deepening trough over California/Nevada Monday night. The trough will continue to deepen with a closed low forming over eastern Nevada/western Utah Tuesday.
Closed low will stay progressive sliding southeast across Arizona/Four Corners region Wednesday and Thursday. Trajectory from the north unfavorable for moisture advection into the Great Basin so looking at a dry trough passage. The NBM 72-hour QPF 90th percentile (worst case scenario) ending Friday morning shows only light precipitation over the higher terrain of Great Basin NP, mountains of SW Utah and the Kaibab Plateau east of Mohave County.

Downward trend in wind speeds will take us through Monday. However, on backside of exiting trough north winds will once again strengthen Tuesday into Wednesday. North breezes will stay elevated within the lower CRV into the weekend, while elsewhere speeds will weaken Thursday-Saturday under a ridge of high pressure.

Little variation in NBM temperatures through the week with values hovering around 4-7 degrees above normal.

AVIATION
For Harry Reid...Light winds less than 8kts this morning will turn northeasterly (030-060) by mid-morning. The northeast winds will continue through sunset before a more typical diurnal light southwest wind develops overnight. Light winds favoring typical diurnal trends will continue on Monday. Only a FEW-SCT high clouds AOA 20kft are expected through the TAF period.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Gusty northerly winds over 30kts will continue through this afternoon in the lower Colorado River Valley, with the highest winds expected near KIFP. Winds will decrease this evening and overnight at KEED, but the gusty winds will persist at KIFP through the evening before gradually diminishing overnight. Elsewhere, most areas will see light winds of less than 8kts, favoring typical diurnal directional trends. Only a FEW-SCT high clouds AOA 20kft are expected across the region through the TAF period.
