Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 423 PM PST Sun Dec 8 2019

SYNOPSIS. Scattered showers will continue into this morning, ending from north to south on during the afternoon. Can't rule out a stray thunderstorm developing this afternoon in the Diablo Range. Dry conditions are then forecast for most of next week, except for light rain chances late Tuesday and Tuesday night and then again late in the week. Temperatures will be near seasonal averages through next week.

DISCUSSION. as of 1:52 PM PST Sunday . KMUX radar continues to show scattered rain showers around the San Francisco Bay Area and central California coast. The most organized cluster of showers is in central and southern Monterey County. Earlier, these showers brought a quick half inch of rainfall to Salinas and around a quarter inch to Monterey. Additionally, scattered showers are trying to take off in the East Bay and South Bay with the daytime heating just ahead of the upper level trough axis. Can't rule out an isolated thunderstorm or two either, particularly in the Diablo Range. Overall the best potential for stronger showers and thunderstorms will be in the San Joaquin Valley and parts of the Sacramento Valley.

As rain shower chances decrease from north to south through the rest of the afternoon and evening with the passage of the upper level trough, a high-amplitude ridge will be quick to build over the West Coast overnight and into Monday. We'll likely see some fog development in the North Bay Valleys tonight and into Monday morning. Also can't rule out the opportunity for some fog development in the East Bay Valleys and along portions of the San Francisco Bay Shoreline.

And along with the ridging will come dry weather to start off the workweek on Monday. The next opportunity for rain will arrive late Tuesday/early Wednesday with the arrival of a weak shortwave. Overall rain amounts should be light -- generally a few to several tenths of a inch in the North Bay (maybe pushing a half in the North Bay Coastal Range), and dropping off to less than a tenth of an inch elsewhere. The latest ECMWF keeps most of the measurable rainfall north of the Golden Gate. The GFS is even drier, including in the North Bay. All in all, impacts will be little to none.

A broad upper level ridge will develop in the eastern Pacific between about 25 to 30 degrees north latitude from the middle to the end of the week with zonal flow developing aloft for the northern half of California. This broad ridge will help to push the storm track north to northern California, Oregon, and Washington State. The North Bay will likely find itself at the southern edge of another system that will impact the Pacific Northwest late Thursday/Friday. Similar to the Tuesday/Wednesday system, rain amounts look to be rather light for our area of California. Another fast-moving shortwave will arrive to northern and central California on Saturday. In the grand scheme of things, precipitation impacts for this upcoming week for the San Francisco Bay Area will remain low with some communities likely remaining dry.

AVIATION. as of 4:23 PM PST Sunday . VFR-MVFR except local IFR- LIFR along the immediate coastline. Lingering showers diminishing, partial clearing resulting in patchy fog /LIFR-VLIFR/ tonight and Monday morning.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR this evening, IFR ceiling forecast to develop by 12z Monday. Tempo LIFR 15z-19z in fog Monday morning. VFR returns by early afternoon.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . MVFR ceilings, isolated showers diminishing early this evening. Winds becoming light E-SE tonight. West winds returning Monday afternoon.

MARINE. as of 3:59 PM PST Sunday . Most showers have dissipated, though an isolated light rain near the Big Sur coast can still be seen on radar. Winds are out of the northwest and will be breezy into the evening, but will weaken through the night as high pressure builds. Tuesday night into Wednesday morning is still forecast to see the return of rain showers and southerly winds. The moderate west swell will continue tonight. A northwest swell arrives on Monday and gradually builds throughout the coming week.

MTR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Tngt. None.
