Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries...
light winds currently across the coastal waters, but northerly winds will become breezy again this afternoon near point sur while gentle southerly winds persist across the northern waters. Patchy dense fog will be over the san francisco bay, san pablo bay, and the delta early this morning and will diminish towards the early afternoon. Elevated seas will persist for much of the week as a series of large, long period northwest swells propagate through the waters, resulting in hazardous conditions for small craft operators. Widespread rain chances return midweek.

New AVIATION

SYNOPSIS
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

A short-lived warming trend will begin today and continue into Tuesday. An approaching trough of low pressure will bring the return to unsettled weather Tuesday night into Wednesday that will last into late week.

UPDATE
Issued at 848 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Near term weather impacts are all focused on fog, dense fog in fact. Webcams, spotter reports, and automated sensors point to widespread dense fog across the Sonoma Valley, SF Bay/West Delta, parts of the South Bay, parts of the East Bay. Simply put, if you're traveling on area roadways or waterways (in SF Bay) use caution as visibilities are less than one mile. Did do an update to the forecast earlier in the morning to better capture where fog was in the forecast grids. Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through 10 AM.

Once the fog dissipates mid to late morning, sunny skies will prevail today. Do expect a warmer start to the work week.

No other updates needed this morning. Will fine tune midweek rain chances and cold overnight lows next weekend with the afternoon forecast package.

SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Dense fog has developed over the North Bay Valleys this morning. As such, have issued a Dense Fog Advisory through 10 AM for the northern San Francisco Bay and North Bay zones.

Otherwise, warmer conditions are anticipated this afternoon as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the southwest. As such, drier conditions are also expected. Look for temperatures to warm into the upper 60s across the interior to upper 50s near the immediate coast.

Tonight, temperatures will generally range from the mid 40s to lower 50s in the hills. Dry conditions are also likely to prevail.

LONG TERM
(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 232 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Temperatures will warm into the lower 70s on Tuesday, some 5-10 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Tuesday night into Wednesday a frontal boundary will sweep through the region. Conditions on cool on Wednesday for the North Bay and San Fransico Bay Area while the Central Coast will hold on the one more warm day across the interior. Unsettled conditions persist into Friday. Rainfall amounts from Tuesday night through Friday: 0.25- 0.75" in the North Bay, 0.05-0.25" elsewhere, to barely a trace interior Monterey/San Benito and Santa Clara Valley.

Gradual clearing occurs by Friday night as a colder airmass filers into the region. This combined with clearing skies will lead to some chilly/cold overnight temperatures. Highest confidence (40-60%)for freezing temperatures will be over the interior North Bay and interior areas of Monterey/San Benito counties. The need for frost/freeze products will be monitored.

AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1003 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

With the dense fog encompassing the North Bay, South Bay, East Bay, and SF Bay terminals, most terminals are experiencing LIFR to IFR conditions, as Monterey Bay shows VFR conditions. Improvement from the 1/8SM-4SM visibility is a bit uncertain as satellite shows most of the terminals pretty socked in with fog, but with model guidance and observations, expect clearing time for most terminals near 19Z, with a chance that fog may linger between 19-20Z for KOAK, KSFO, and KSJC. Light winds are expected to become N/NW and moderate this afternoon before becoming light and variable again tonight. Expect another round of low ceilings and fog tonight into early Tuesday morning with some uncertainty on timing. Will monitor updated model data for any necessary changes to the TAFs.

Vicinity of SFO...Currently IFR with moderate confidence on clearing time with satellite showing slow clearing of low ceilings and visibility but expect between 19-20Z. Winds will become N/NW and build to moderate speeds this afternoon. Another round of low ceilings and low visibility is expected early Tuesday morning but timing is uncertain and is expected to improve near 19Z.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR expected through the TAF period with light SE winds. Winds are expected to shift to NW this afternoon with speed up to 9 kt before returning to SE and light to moderate tonight.

MARINE
(Today through Saturday)
Issued at 848 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

Light winds currently across the coastal waters, but northerly winds will become breezy again this afternoon near Point Sur while gentle southerly winds persist across the northern waters. Patchy dense fog will be over the San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay, and the Delta early this morning and will diminish towards the early afternoon. Elevated seas will persist for much of the week as a series of large, long period northwest swells propagate through the waters, resulting in hazardous conditions for small craft operators. Widespread rain chances return midweek.

BEACHES
Issued at 325 AM PST Mon Dec 4 2023

A long period northwest swell will build into the coastal waters this afternoon, resulting in large, unexpected waves that can sweep across the beach without warning through Tuesday. Sneaker waves can sweep people and pets into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches as well as move large objects such as logs, crushing anyone caught underneath. Northwest-facing beaches are most at risk for sneaker waves today into tomorrow. Additional long- period swells are expected to move through the waters through midweek, resulting in potentially another round of sneaker waver risks. As these swells build into midweek, large wave heights are forecasted which may result in the issuance of a High Surf Advisory. Be sure to stay updated with the forecast for any beach hazard updates this week.
