New AVIATION, MARINE
SYNOPSIS
Issued at 1235 AM PST Fri Dec 8 2023
High pressure will bring quiet weather over the next several days.
Cold overnights and interior frost/freezing conditions are expected before a gradual warming trend occurs early next week.
SHORT TERM
(This evening through Saturday)
Issued at 136 PM PST Fri Dec 8 2023
After a chilly start to the day with pockets of dense fog, wall to wall sunshine covers the Bay Area and Central Coast this afternoon. Temperatures will top out in the 50s to mid 60.
High pressure aloft currently off the SoCal coast will strengthen and inch its way closer to the coast tonight and Saturday. The ingredients for ideal radiational cooling will be met: light winds, clear skies, and drier air near the surface. First and foremost, a Freeze Warning remains in effect for the the North Bay valleys and interior Monterey and San Benito Counties. Given the set up there is moderate confidence (60-70%) that the S Salinas Valley could drop into the mid 20s. Low temperatures elsewhere around the forecast area will be in the upper 30s to low 40s...not cold enough to warrant frost/freeze.
Cold start on Saturday, but expect another sunny day with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s ( a few degrees warmer than Friday).
LONG TERM
(Saturday night through next Thursday)
Issued at 225 PM PST Fri Dec 8 2023
The longwave pattern begins to change slightly Saturday night as high pressure weakens and a shortwave trough approaches from the NW. Expect another cold night Saturday night into Sunday morning.
The North Bay valleys and interior Monterey and San Benito Counties are currently in a Freeze Watch to capture the third night in a row of cold temperatures. This watch may end up being converted to a frost advisory as temperatures warm a few degrees.
Regardless, temperatures will be chilly/cold.
Less impactful weather heading into next weak as the shortwave trough rides over the ridge with little to no fanfare. Overnight lows will remain chilly and in the upper 30s to 40s with highs in the upper 50s and 60s.
Early next week a second shortwave trough moves through the PacNW.
This feature ultimately deepens over the Great Basin into a cut- low by Tuesday and then retrogrades Wednesday. Any impacts to the Bay Area? Not really, still pretty quiet with temperatures warming a few degrees and remaining close to seasonal or above seasonal averages.
AVIATION
(00Z TAFS)
Issued at 324 PM PST Fri Dec 8 2023
Generally VFR through the TAF period. Light to breezy northwesterly winds across the region through the evening, turning offshore and light overnight into Saturday. Low confidence for isolated radiational fog in the North Bay valleys and areas of fog from the Central Valley moving into the far interior East Bay, both on Saturday morning.
Vicinity of SFO... VFR through the TAF period, with light northwesterly flow through the evening, then light offshore flow overnight. Northwest flow returns Saturday afternoon.
SFO Bridge Approach... Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals... VFR through the TAF period. Breezy northwest flow continues through the evening, then light drainage flow overnight. North to northwest flow resumes Saturday afternoon.
