Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 115 PM PST Thu Nov 30 2023

Synopsis
Precipitation chances linger through the end of the week into the early weekend. Quieter weather and a gradual warming trend are then expected late weekend into early next week.

Discussion
Longwave troughing aloft continues to dominate the upper level pattern for interior NorCal today. Partly to mostly cloudy skies are evident via latest GOES- West satellite imagery as of early this afternoon as a result. High temperatures remain on track to reach normal values by this afternoon despite the cloud cover. A quick moving system is already bringing increasing precipitation to portions of northern California and will continue to spread precipitation chances east and southward throughout the day and into the evening and overnight hours. Best chances for accumulating precipitation look to remain over the mountains of the Coastal Range, southern Cascades, and portions of the Sierra.
Probabilities for exceeding 4" of snowfall along the Sierra are in the 40 to 60% range, with a 20 to 40% chance of exceeding 2" of snowfall along areas of the southern Cascades. Elsewhere, primarily throughout Shasta and Tehama counties, probabilities of exceeding 0.25" of rainfall are in the 20 to 40% range. These precipitation chances will follow the trajectory of the attendant shortwave and as such, look to taper off moving into the day on Friday. Furthermore, as an area of clearing works into the region overnight, cold early morning temperatures are expected, with a 20 to 40% chance of temperatures below 32F in the central Sacramento Valley and a 50 to 70% chance across the northern Sacramento Valley.

As the flow pattern aloft remains generally northwesterly into interior NorCal, chances for light precipitation will persist into the early weekend as another shortwave moves through. Given the upper level flow pattern, the best chances for accumulating precipitation look to remain confined to the Coastal Range and attendant portions of the northern Sacramento Valley. This will likely result in more isolated shower activity than anything, with a 40 to 70% chance of exceeding 0.25" of precipitation with this system in these areas from Friday evening into Saturday.

Upper level ridging will then begin to push the longwave troughing eastward late weekend into early next week. This will result in quieter weather from Sunday into Monday alongside a gradual warming trend. High temperatures rebound into the low to mid 60s by Monday afternoon throughout the Valley, with 50s anticipated in the mountains.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday)...

As upper level ridging persists across the early week period, the quiet and warm weather pattern will prevail into Tuesday and partially into Wednesday. High temperatures in the Valley look to breach the mid 60s both days, with mid to upper 50s in the mountains. By mid to late week, the upper ridge is expected to transition eastward toward the central US as an upper trough digs down from the Gulf of Alaska over the Eastern Pacific. This will result in a southwesterly flow setup over interior NorCal during this time frame. This flow pattern will be conducive for periodic shortwaves to bring precipitation chances to at least portions of the forecast area with temperatures falling as this occurs.

AVIATION

VFR conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours except widespread MVFR/IFR over the northern Sierra with snow showers (thru about 06Z Friday). Some MVFR haze possible across the northern San Joaquin Valley Friday morning depending on how fast skies clear out behind system that moves across tonight. Surface wind gusts generally below 12 kts.
