Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1256 PM PDT Tue Oct 15 2024
SYNOPSIS
Scattered light rain showers are expected across interior Northern California on Wednesday. Critical fire weather conditions are then expected Thursday night through Saturday evening from gusty winds and low humidities. Seasonal temperatures in the 70s are then forecast for early next week.
DISCUSSION
A fairly quick moving short wave will push across the area later tonight through Wednesday. It still looks like this system is not super strong and main impact will be scattered mainly light showers. NBM probabilities indicate that heaviest precipitation will be confined to the foothills and mountains with the probability of 0.25" from 40% to 60%. There will also be a slight chance (around 20%) of a stray thunderstorm mainly from Burney Basin southward across the Sierra.
Wednesday night through Friday...an upper level trough will dig south from the Gulf of Alaska and eventually close off near the 4 corners area by Friday afternoon. This weather system is a classic inside slider which will cause critical fire weather conditions due to gusty north winds and low humidity. The most impactful timeframe looks to be on Friday with deep northerly flow across the area. NBM continues to highlight gusts up to 55 mph in the Delta area Friday. Due to these gusty winds we have also issued a wind advisory for in general the Delta area. Critical fire weather conditions will be at it's peak on Friday as humidities drop to near single digits along with the wind and poor fuels conditions.
Conditions will be the worse mainly on the western side of the northern Sacramento Valley west of interstate 5.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday)...
Saturday we will continue to see at least some impact from the inside slider system mentioned above. Still some northerly flow and off shore pressure gradients to cause some gusty winds at times. The Red Flag warning will continue through Saturday due to these conditions. The upper low causing these conditions fills and moves off to the east by Sunday allowing some ridging to build into the area. This will result in dry conditions and seasonal temperatures in the 70s across the area. These conditions look to persist through Tuesday of next week. Rasch
