Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1051 PM PDT Sun Sep 20 2020

SYNOPSIS. Cooling trend will begin across the Bay Area on Monday. This trend will keep the region a few degrees below normal through the work week. Offshore winds and a warming trend are expected next weekend into early next week.

DISCUSSION. as of 9:40 PM PDT Sunday . Weak upper level ridging combined with a strong northerly pressure gradient at the surface brought warm temperatures to the district today. Highs were as much as 5-10 degrees warmer than yesterday. Smoke from the fires in northern California brough moderately unhealthy air quality to the North Bay and parts of the Bay Area. Further to the north, air quality was in the unhealthy category at times. A shallow marine layer has allowed stratus formations along the coast this evening but inland penetration should be limited.

A weak upper level trough will approach from the west Monday and Tuesday. This will increase the onshore flow and deepen the marine layer a little bit. As a result temperatures will be about 4-8 degrees cooler Monday and Tuesday. Near-surface smoke models forecast an improvement in air quality by Monday night.

An upper level low from the Gulf of Alaska will approach the Pacific Northwest Wednesday and Thursday. This system will bring decent rains to the Pacific Northwest but models only bring the rain as far south as about Humboldt County on Thursday. The impact on our district will be deepening the marine layer with higher humidities in the mountains which will aid fire fighting efforts at least for a short period of time.

Long range models have been coming more in line with each other trending towards a weaker offshore event this weekend but more towards a heat event around Sunday and Monday. Synoptically, the models show the upper trough that moves inland is more progressive and does not deepen over the Great Basin as much which would result in only a light offshore flow. Models now build a strong high pressure system over the state on Saturday reaching its peak strength Sunday and Monday, possibly into Tuesday. The ECMWF has a stronger high with a 598 dm high centered off the northern California coast at 500 mb. This could push inland temperatures into the 90s with some triple digits possible. Again the days of concern for heat will be Sunday through Tuesday. Things can still change by then so please continue to monitor the latest forecasts for possible heat or offshore wind events.

AVIATION. As of 10:51 PM PDT Sunday . for 06Z TAFS. VFR across the Bay Area except VLIFR to IFR with stratus, fog and a patch or two of light drizzle hugging the coast. Smoke has been filtering down from the wildfires in Northern California, with low impacts to terminals, mainly haze impacting slant-range vis North and East Bay terminals. Typical onshore wind pattern with breezy conditions continuing into evening and settling down overnight. Marine layer reestablishing itself, but have seen some deepening to the south at Fort Ord tonight.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR then stratus resulting in MVFR conditions overnight. Any cigs should dissipate by Monday mid-morning. Onshore wind flow through tonight and Monday.

SFO Bridge Approach . Possible lowered slant-range vis from haze.

Monterey Bay Terminals . VLIFR to IFR conditions in stratus and fog tonight and Monday morning. Light onshore winds overnight. Clearing for VFR conditions by late Monday morning with onshore wind flow resuming, IFR returning early to mid Monday evening.

MARINE. as of 10:40 PM PDT Sunday . A surface ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific will move slowly eastward reaching our coastal waters by mid to late week. Gusty northwest winds over the northern waters tonight will extend to the inner coastal waters Monday. Mixed seas will persist with a shorter period northwest swell and a longer period southwest swell. Expect northwest swell to build late this week.
