Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1157 PM PST Tue Dec 10 2019

SYNOPSIS. A moist zonal flow will keep a chance of light rain in the forecast for much of the week, with the best chances across the North Bay. A system will bring another chance of rain and cooler temperatures on Saturday with dry weather returning Sunday and Monday.

DISCUSSION. as of 9:59 PM PST Tuesday . An amplifying, small scale, moderately strong mid level trough is passing quickly to the east over the forecast area this evening. Considering dry air present in the lower to mid levels of the atmosphere per the 00z Oakland sounding, the dynamics attended by marginal at best jet streak winds within the trough produced a tenth to a third of an inch of rain over the North Bay, a few hundredths to two tenths of an inch over the East Bay a tenth of an inch or less over the Santa Cruz mountains as the rain band continues to expand to the south while moving east. The mid level trough passing by this evening has separated from the surface cold front that's still plodding along over the offshore waters and becoming less discernible with time while moving east at about 10 mph per theta-e forecasts. Early evening infrared satellite imagery showed a sharp contrast of cloud cover (upward motion prior to) to no cloud cover (downward motion after) the 500 mb trough axis. Isentropic slantwise flow as would be expected briefly intensified with this trough over the Bay Area. The NAM model had trouble keeping up with rain amounts over the Bay Area, the HRRR model faired a little better forecasting rain amounts, but not by much; it's a good example of the limitations regarding model resolution and small scale, but potent troughs.

For the large scale picture we're locked in with a zonal flow pattern for the foreseeable future. Moist Pacific air in this zonal pattern will bring periodic light rain mainly over northernmost portions of the cwa through the week. For additional information please see the previous forecast discussion.

PREV DISCUSSION. as of 1:55 PM PST Tuesday . A moist zonal flow will develop Wednesday through the end of the week. A subtle disturbance in the flow and warm advection will bring a chance of rain mainly north of the Golden Gate on Wednesday night and Thursday. Moist onshore flow will continue into Friday with the best chance of light rain continuing across the North Bay. Rainfall through the end of the week will be light with minimal impacts. A slightly warmer airmass will also arrive with highs on Thursday in the lower to middle 60s. The moist flow will also provide for mild overnight lows, mainly in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The moist zonal flow will bring mostly cloudy skies through the week.

A shortwave trough will then move through northern California on Saturday. Currently, most of the precipitation with this system is forecast to remain to our north. The trough will bring a cooler airmass to the region on Saturday with highs dropping back into the 50s. A cool, drier northwesterly flow will develop on Sunday followed by upper level ridging early next week. A progressive pattern still looks to persist into next week, but the Euro ensemble has trended towards less amplified troughing.

AVIATION. as of 10:11 PM PST Tuesday . Low level moisture has moved into the area tonight along with some light rain. Models keep abundant low-level mositure through Wednesday. MVFR cigs will be predominant through the night and is expected through most of the day Wednesday. Winds will be light and generally out of the southeast. Radar indicates the rain band is moving out of the area with a few showers behind it. Precip tapering off Wednesday morning.

Vicinity of KSFO . Cigs lowering into MVFR with bases 2000-3000 ft. Light east to southeast winds under 10 kt.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . Low clouds have moved into MRY and SNS but approaching rain band will mix it out somewhat which will raise the cigs into MVFR category. MVFR cigs expected with possible scattering out in the afternoon. Generally southeast winds under 10 kt.

MARINE. as of 10:00 PM PST Tuesday . A weak frontal system will bring light to moderate rain to the northern waters tonight. Light to moderate southerly winds will then continue through much of the week as a series of frontal systems pass north of the area. Winds shifting to the northwest towards the weekend. A moderate northwest swell will persist before a longer period northwest swell arrives on Thursday. Wave heights will gradually build heading into the coming weekend creating hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels.
