SYNOPSIS
Issued at 355 AM PST Thu Dec 7 2023

Scattered showers will continue through the day today with an additional few hundredths of an inch to 0.2" expected through the day today. Patchy dense fog being reported across the 101 corridor in Sonoma Co. Rain chances diminish by the evening and cold overnight lows expected for the next 2 nights. Warming trend expected early next week.

SHORT TERM
(Today and tonight)

Scattered showers continue across the region in the post-frontal environment. Very weak instability (<100 J/kg), but elevated nonetheless will result in some showers bringing locally heavier rainfall rates. A cell moved over the office in Monterey earlier tonight, dumping 0.11" over the airport in just a few minutes.
Scattered showers will linger through the early morning hours.
Another weakening cold front will pass through later this morning/afternoon, which will prolong the chances for showers through the evening today. As unsettled weather across the Pacific NW settles down with the upper level trough exiting the region today, this will likely be the last rain the Bay Area and Central Coast gets until mid to late Dec (with the exception of a transient shortwave trough bringing small chances over the waters Monday).

After the cold frontal passage this afternoon, ridge of high pressure will start to build in. The colder airmass is already here, and under the growing influence of high pressure allowing for clear skies late tonight into Friday, colder overnight lows are expected. A Frost Advisory is now in effect for the North Bay Valleys and S Salinas Valley and San Benito Co. NBM continues to feature a high probability (70-90%) of sheltered areas along the 101 corridor of Sonoma Co dipping to freezing temps. These temperatures will be hazardous for vulnerable populations and sensitive vegetation.

LONG TERM
(Friday through Wednesday)

High pressure will remain the main driver of weather for us through the weekend. Clear skies and lighter winds Friday night into Saturday will allow for more efficient radiational cooling. Higher confidence for widespread lows in the upper 30s across the interior valleys of the Bay Area early Sat with isolated low to mid 30s. Isolated spots in interior Monterey Co an San Benito Co have a high prob of dipping into the upper 20s Sat morning. As such, a Freeze Watch has been issued for the S Salinas Valley and San Benito Co. We'll be keeping our eye on potentially issuing a frost product (widespread lows between 33 and 36) for the Santa Clara Valley for early Sat, but confidence in how widespread the low to mid 30s will be is still low currently.

Warming trend is expected through early next week, which will bring an end to the cold nights. Highs by Tuesday will be in the mid to upper 60s across the region, running 5 to 10 degrees above normal for mid Dec.



AVIATION

Patchy IFR-LIFR stratus and fog across the North Bay and interior valleys, along with scattered showers and mid-level clouds across the Central Coast. MVFR ceilings encroach in the morning before another round of showers comes through this afternoon, with winds picking up from the west and the southwest, shifting towards the northwest and north after the showers pass. Skies will generally clear in the evening and overnight hours. Low confidence for stratus development in the interior regions overnight.

Vicinity of SFO... MVFR ceilings developing later this morning, with gusty west winds and rain showers this afternoon. Winds turn to the northwest after the showers pass, with clearing skies and north winds overnight.

SFO Bridge Approach... Similar to SFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals... Patchy mist near SNS, although spatial extent is hard to determine because of mid-level clouds over the area. Moderate confidence of MVFR stratus across the area this morning, with some scattering out later in the morning before a band of showers comes through in the afternoon. Skies will clear out after the showers pass. West to southwest winds pick up in advance of the shower band, shifting to the northwest after the showers pass.

MARINE

With swell heights and periods diminishing to 11 to 13 feet at 15 seconds and continuing to diminish, high surf advisory was allowed to expire at 4 AM this morning. However, larger breaking waves and a turbulent surf zone will linger through the day today, so continue to use caution if going to the beach and give yourself more distance from the water.
