Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1205 PM PDT Sun Mar 8 2026
KEY MESSAGES
- Well-above normal temperatures today, with slightly cooler, yet still above-normal temperatures this week
- Dry weather is forecast rest of the week
DISCUSSION
...Today-Monday...
Mostly clear skies, along with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 60s at the time of this writing prevail across interior NorCal. Low pressure off the coast of Baja California, and upper level ridging strengthening in the eastern Pacific have allowed for light southerly winds to develop, with winds much weaker compared to yesterday's breezy to gusty afternoon. Monday we will see similar weather conditions across the area as the low pressure to our south will begin to slowly move east. While no precipitation is expected, some elevated instability may make its way into the portions of the Sierra, mainly south of US50. Chances are less than 5% for precipitation or thunder and therefore not in the official forecast, but the small chance is worth noting.
...Tuesday-Saturday...
As the low moves further east on Tuesday, we will see high temperatures slightly cool across the region, although they will still be above-normal. By mid-week, EPAC ridging strengthens and will remain in firm control of the weather pattern. High temperatures will climb back into the mid to upper 70s and eventually breaking the 80 degree mark by the weekend. With the above normal temperatures, HeatRisk products are beginning to make their way into the forecast. By this weekend, Minor HeatRisk is likely across most of the Valley and into the foothills. As a reminder, warmer temperatures will likely lead to increased water activities, so if you plan on hitting the local waterways, expect very cold water temperatures, always wear a life jacket, and cold water can cause hypothermia causing even experienced swimmers to quickly lose muscle control.
AVIATION
VFR conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, with winds less than 12 kts. Additionally, there is a 15 to 30% chance of patchy MVFR conditions due to low cloud development in the Valley between 12 and 15Z Monday.
STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
None.
