Synopsis
Patchy Valley fog this morning. Expect breezy northerly winds for much of the Valley by this afternoon. Dry conditions and increasingly cold temperatures are expected into the weekend, with areas of frost.
The shortwave that brought widespread rain and mountain snow has shifted east of the area. Upper level ridging brought clearing skies, which has allowed fog to develop in mountain basins and in portions of the Valley. Satellite at 3:15 am shows fog in the Valley mainly along the Sacramento River, especially over the northern Sacramento Valley and around Sacramento and into the northern San Joaquin Valley. Northerly winds are begining to increase, though, which is moving the fog southward. This wind should limit widespread development of dense fog this morning. It will likely bring rapidly changing visibility conditions in some local areas, though, so be prepared for this for the morning commute.
Dry conditions return today and continue into the weekend as the upper ridging continues to build in behind the departing system. A few showers may develop across northwestern portions of Shasta County Sunday as a disturbance brushes by to the north Sunday, but little to no precipitation is expected. Breezy northerly winds develop by this afternoon and continue into Saturday morning, with gusts up to 15-30 mph along the west side of the Sacramento Valley. A weak shortwave brushing through on Monday will have little moisture, again bringing a slight chance of light showers to northwestern Shasta County.
Cold morning lows with areas of frost are forecast over the weekend as Valley lows drop into the low to mid 30s. NBM suggests a 30-90% probability of low temperatures of at least 32 degrees Saturday, especially on wind sheltered areas on the eastern side the Valley. There is a 30-50% probability Sunday morning. Take the necessary precautions to protect pets, plants, and people from the cold. Monday temperatures will be a little more mild, with the NBM projecting Valley morning lows above freezing and afternoon highs into the low to mid 60s. //EK
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Tuesday THROUGH Friday)...
EPAC upper ridge builds inland over interior NorCal Tuesday into Wednesday resulting in dry weather and locally gusty north to east wind. Weak short wave trough progged through midweek, but models differ with strength and progression. Available moisture looks limited and thus QPF dry. Upper ridge then rebuilds over the CWA towards the end of the week. High temperatures next week expected to be slightly above normal.
AVIATION
VFR conditions over interior NorCal next 24 hrs except lcl MVFR/IFR/LIFR in BR/FG in Central Vly til 17z. Areas of Nly sfc wind in Central Vly to 20 kts btwn 17z-03z. In foothills/mtns, lcl N-E sfc wind gusts up to 30 kts til 18z Sat.
