Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 846 PM EST Sun Dec 3 2023

SYNOPSIS
A cold front will move through the region this afternoon. A second stronger cold front will pass through the area late Tuesday night. High pressure builds for the second half of next week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/
With low pressure moving offshore, the cold front is moving across the local region. This is resulting in the cldcvr to diminish as drier air works in. However, low-level moisture remains in some areas and is resulting in patchy dense fog. Have maintained a Special Weather Statement for some areas along with a Marine Weather Statement for dense fog over the waters.
The low level moisture will eventually erode through the first half of the overnight giving way to mostly clear skies (aside from the Allegheny front).

A few rain showers will transition to snow showers in the Appalachians tonight and into daybreak Monday. Little to no accumulation expected.

SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/
An area of weak high pressure will evolve during the day Monday.
Some mid-level and high clouds will maneuver over the region as well. Temperatures will be cooler Monday afternoon with highs in the lower 50s. Mid-level energy will move across the area Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night. This will enhance or strengthen the colder air, as well as produce additional snow showers in the mountains. A couple of inches of snow are possible through early morning Wednesday. We may not need a winter weather advisory considering the snow will accumulate over a longer period of time.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
A clipper system will be moving across the area Wednesday morning.
Latest indications are that there may be enough overlap of lift and moisture for a few rain/snow showers east of the mountains, though temperatures are marginal especially east of US-15.

Colder than normal temperatures and blustery conditions will follow the clipper through Thursday, then milder temperatures build in Friday into Saturday as high pressure shifts overhead then offshore.

A large trough and cold front approach the area next weekend, setting the stage for unsettled weather. Uncertainty lingers in the details, but some gusty winds, downpours, or even rumbles of thunder are possible.

AVIATION /02Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
CIGs are gradually lifting across the region as the cold front moves through. Low-level ground fog is developing resulting in lowered VSBYs at some terminals. With dry air continuing to work into the region, expect condtions to improve overnight. No issues with CIGS/VSBYs on Monday.

VFR conditions Monday night through Tuesday night. If the speed of the next disturbance late Tuesday is faster than models indicate, then MVFR cigs could evolve with any rain or snow showers that spill over the mountains into eastern West Virginia and northeast Virginia.

Patchy sub-VFR in -SHRA/-SHSN possible Wed AM. Otherwise, VFR with intermittent stratocu and blustery W/NW winds Wed-Thu.

MARINE
Have maintained a MWS through the evening for dense fog over the waters. Winds should stay below SCA through Tuesday night.
Winds may be close to SCA for Upper Potomac late Monday morning through Monday afternoon with a northwest flow. For now, not going with a SCA just a mention.

Gusty W/NW winds likely breach SCA criteria Wednesday before diminishing heading into Thursday.
