Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 902 PM EDT Fri Nov 1 2024
SYNOPSIS
High pressure will build over the region tonight through Monday morning before moving offshore later in the week. A cold front will cross the area around the middle portion of next week.
Weak high pressure returns for the second half of next week.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/
Winds are starting to decrease this evening, but continue out of the northwest. Skies are mostly clear, with just some passing high clouds across far southern portions of the forecast area.
Skies should remain mostly clear through the first half of the night, but some high clouds may start to move in from the southwest during the second half of the night. Low temperatures will generally be in the 40s to the east of the Blue Ridge, with upper 30s to near 40 to the west of the Blue Ridge.
SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/
High pressure will continue to build into the area through Monday morning supporting fair weather and seasonable temperatures in the low 60s during the day and around 40 at night.
LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
A large surface high over Southern New England moves offshore at the start of next week. A potent upper trough and associated surface cold front rapidly move across the Great Lakes into the Northeast states Tuesday into Wednesday. The surface high that moved offshore begins to slide south toward the west central Atlantic in response. There remains considerable disagreement in the models as to what occurs in the middle of next week. Some of the guidance indicates the upper trough quickly traverses the area, with little to no rainfall, while others stall the front out directly overhead. These solutions would yield considerably different results, making the current forecast from Tuesday night onward very uncertain at this time. Temperatures once again warm to well above normal, with highs going from the 60s Monday to 70s to near 80F by Wednesday.
AVIATION /01Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
VFR conditions will continue at the terminals through the weekend. Winds have started to decrease this evening, but will continue out of the northwest through the night. Winds will turn out of the north during the day tomorrow, before becoming light out of the east and then southeast on Sunday.
Sub-VFR ceilings are possible Monday in light southeast winds as high pressure over southern New England moves offshore. A warm front lifts north by Tuesday, bringing southwest winds that could gust to around 20 knots.
MARINE
Solid SCA conditions are expected through 06Z, before winds diminish overnight. Borderline/marginal SCA conditions are possible across the southern waters Saturday into Sunday morning before diminishing further as high pressure settles to the north.
Strong high pressure over southern New England moves offshore at the start of next week. This causes our local winds to shift southeast Monday, then south to southwest on Tuesday. Southerly channeling is possible Monday night into Tuesday, which could result in Small Craft Advisory conditions over the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay. These elevated winds could continue into Tuesday night.
