DISCUSSION

* After a week of above normal temperatures along with afternoon showers and thunderstorms we're going to change up the script.
With a trough pattern in place through the start of next week, much cooler temperatures will return to the region. Temperatures today will be much cooler compared to Friday, ending up around 4 to 8 degrees below average for late July. We'll maintain these slightly below normal temperatures through Tuesday. Along with the lower temperatures, a much drier airmass will filter into the area. There is no precipitation expected for at least the next 7 days. Westerly winds will remain breezy through the morning along the ridgetops in the Lake Tahoe area south into Mono County, with gusts upwards of 30-40 mph. Otherwise, winds become lighter Sunday into Tuesday, with the typical afternoon breezes.

* We made it through Spring and almost two months of Summer without any major impacts of wildfire smoke. Unfortunately with the ongoing wildfires in northern CA and northern NV, our luck of good air quality is running out. For today into Sunday morning the HRRR and high-resolution models show the winds become more west/northwesterly at 700mb and 500mb. The latest HRRR smoke model output has picked up on this pattern, and pushes heavier smoke through most of Lassen County east through central and northern Washoe County, into Pershing and Churchill counties. The Reno area at the moment is right on the southern edge of this smoke plume, so air quality may start to decrease later today and tonight. Winds aloft on Sunday become more southwesterly, so smoke may stay further north. Any changes to wind direction this week has the potential to spread smoke through the rest of the eastern Sierra and western NV.

* By mid-week through next weekend, ensembles start to show high pressure building back into the western US. Blended guidance once again shows temperatures increasing back to normal on Wednesday, to above seasonal averages by the end of the week.

* Ridgetop winds in the Tahoe area south into Mono County will remain elevated this morning, with sustained west/southwest winds of 15-20 kts and gusts of 30-40kts. Otherwise, typical westerly breezes of 10-15 kts with gusts of 20-25 kts at all terminals this afternoon.

* Smoke and haze from local wildfires will produce areas of reduced slantwise visibilities for northeast CA, central and northern Washoe County, and into Pershing and Churchill counties. -McKellar
