Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 202 AM PDT Sat Jul 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
A few degrees cooler today with isolated showers and thunderstorms across mainly White Pine and eastern Elko counties.
Breezy west to southwest winds with gusts of 15 to 25 mph over most of the region this afternoon and early evening. Smoke from California wildfires will continue to impact northern and central Nevada over the coming days with periods of both reduced visibility and air quality likely.

SHORT TERM
Today through Sunday night. Relatively weak trough energy passing over the region bring drier air in across the western half of the CWA today. Eastern Elko county and White Pine county can expect isolated to scattered thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening. The passing trough today will also result in breezy west to southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 15 to 25 mph during the afternoon and early evening hours. Dry late this evening and overnight with diminishing clouds and winds. Weak instability Sunday afternoon will result in cumulus build-ups over and near White Pine county as well as eastern Elko county, however at this time not expecting any showers or thunderstorm activity. In the wake of today's passing trough, temperatures begin to trend warmer on Sunday.

LONG TERM
Monday through next Friday. The weather pattern will consist of a strong and large upper level ridge centered across the southern United States with a weak Pacific coast trough.
Southwest flow aloft will keep a lid on any active weather across northern and central Nevada as the air mass is forecast to remain dry. High temperatures will remain near normal with readings in the 80s and 90s. Minimum relative humidity values will be between 8 and 14 percent across the forecast area and wind gusts will be around 25 to 30 mph. This will create elevated fire weather conditions for portions of central Nevada and will need to be monitored for fire weather headlines. The dry conditions will persist during the overnight with lows in the 40s and 50s.

For Tuesday through Thursday, all models show the upper level ridge over the southern United States gradually intensifying and moving westward during this period. Dry conditions will continue through this time frame with high temperatures warming a degree or two each day, though this warming could be mitigated by smoke due to nearby wildfires in California. As it stands, afternoon highs could climb into the mid 90s to even hitting 100 degrees in spots. Overnight lows will be in the 50s, warming into the 50s and 60s by Thursday.

By Friday, model simulations are showing the upper ridge setting up a position near the four-corners region. This will change the flow to a more southerly direction. Some subtropical moisture will begin moving northward and as a result, low end PoPs continue for Friday. With high temperatures reaching the 90s to low 100s, these storms could initially be dry and will bear watching.

AVIATION
VFR conditions will dominate through the next 24 hours. Isolated -TSRA will be confined to portions of northeastern and east-central Nevada later this afternoon and evening. Wind speeds will be SW-W10-15G25KT over all terminals, though convective wind gusts to 35KT are possible with any storm. HZ and FU from wildfires in California will cause temporary MVFR reductions to VSBY/CIG during the morning hours.

FIRE WEATHER
Dry air spreads in from the west today limiting shower and thunderstorm activity to mainly zones 425 and 470.
Temperatures will trend a few degrees cooler across the region today. Most fire weather zones can expect W-SW winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts of 15 to 25 mph this afternoon and early evening.
At this time all zones are expected to be dry and storm-free on Sunday, though there will be some afternoon cumulus build-ups over and near zones 425 and 470.

LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories
