AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 245 PM PST Mon Jan 13 2025
SYNOPSIS
Dry weather is expected to continue with above normal high temperatures and chilly nights for the next 7 days.
DISCUSSION
A rex-block synoptic pattern has developed over our area, continuing our streak of dry weather, warmer than normal daytime temperatures, and mostly clear skies. Clear skies will keep nighttime temperatures chilly, upper 20s to low 30s, including the coast. Winds remain breezy in Lake County this afternoon and are likely to remain breezy into the evening, before trending downward tonight into Tuesday. Northeasterly wind gusts up to 30-40 mph are possible in the highest elevations and up to 20-25 mph possible in the lower elevations this afternoon.
Some weakening of the ridge is possible late-week, which could disrupt offshore flow and bring some more widespread cloud cover and possibly coastal stratus. The NBM probability of any measurable precipitation is less than 10 percent. Behind this weak system, stronger offshore flow is expected to redevelop, returning gusty northeasterly winds to the coast and in the higher elevations of Lake County this weekend. A cooler airmass will also fill in, returning chilly overnight low temperatures. Ensemble clusters remain in good agreement of a ridging pattern continuing through the weekend. Some ensemble disagreement finally arises early next week, but fewer than 15% of members show a troughing pattern developing.
JB
AVIATION
Gusty offshore winds have eased this afternoon. Light northerly winds prevail at KCEC and KACV through the day. Winds veer a bit southeasterly around 2 or 3Z at KACV tonight while KCEC looks to have more of an easterly bearing around dusk and later into tonight. Model soundings show dry air from the surface and upward through the vertical column. Cirrus clouds at higher altitudes with cirrostratus are being observed as some of the colder air aloft wraps around the offshore high of the current Rex-block pattern, which will also drive offshore flow. MVFR/VFR is likely through the TAF period. Light winds and prevailing MVFR conditions are expected at KUKI. /EYS
MARINE
Winds are rapidly diminishing as the coastal pressure gradient weakens. Wave heights remain elevated as a long period westerly swell fills in this afternoon. Much calmer conditions are expected tonight through late week as a high pressure ridge moves into the PNW. Weak northerlies and seas 5 to 8 feet will persist through Thursday before a deep interior trough brings the potential for elevated winds Friday into the weekend.
Another long period NW swell will fill into the waters early Tuesday. A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for threat of sneaker waves Tuesday and Wednesday.
