Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 1202 PM PDT Tue Aug 18 2026

KEY MESSAGES

* Dry and warm conditions through Thursday across the Eastern Sierra and western Nevada.

* Breezy conditions are expected each afternoon, with stronger winds possible Friday into the weekend.

* Shower and thunderstorm potential returns by Friday for the Eastern Sierra of southern Mono county.

DISCUSSION

Afternoon highs peak Wednesday and Thursday, topping out near 100 for lower valleys and mid to upper 80s for Sierra communities. A cooling trend will welcome the weekend, with highs dropping to the low 90s for W NV and lower valleys, and low 80s for the Sierra.
This will be contributed to a dome of high pressure propagating eastward.

With the high moving eastward, and a trough off the California coast tracking northeastward and inland, this will increase our daily afternoon breezes Friday and Saturday. Expect widespread gusts up to 30 mph, locally higher in wind prone areas and along the higher terrain. These enhanced winds coupled with dry fuels in NE CA and NW NV will produce a handful of elevated to critical fire weather conditions both days.

Monsoonal moisture will also move its way into the area this weekend, increasing the chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms. At this time, the best chances (15-20%) will be in southern Mono, southern Lyon, Mineral, and eastern Churchill counties Friday through at least Sunday. While this seems to be a similar pattern to what we had last week, there is less moisture this time around; storms will be more isolated in nature, with the main concern being strong outflows and lightning.

AVIATION

VFR conditions continue through much of the week with typical breezes up to 20 kts. Lower CIGS/VIS for KMMH by Friday with afternoon shower and thunderstorm development (15-20% chance).
Otherwise, breezes increase to 30-35 kts for all terminals Friday and Saturday.
