SYNOPSIS
* Near to below normal temperatures and light winds are expected for the remainder of this week.
* This weekend a brief warm up arrives for Saturday followed by cooler temperatures and gusty southwest winds on Sunday.
* A system provides another round of gusty winds, cooler weather, and potential for precipitation early next week.
DISCUSSION
Winds today will be much lighter than yesterday, as we see a few lingering clouds on the back side of the recent trough that brought all the wind concerns. Winds gusts today will range around 10 mph across western Nevada valleys, with ridge gusts roughly the same, up to 15 mph. Another noticeable change is the cooler than average temperatures for today. Lower valleys will see mid to upper 70s while Sierra valleys will see lower 70s.
We see temperatures rebound back into the low 80s across western Nevada with mid 70s to low 80s for Sierra valleys. Winds will be similar to today for Friday. Saturday highs will climb to mid to upper 80s for lower valleys and lower 80s for Sierra locations.
Winds for Saturday will start to see a slight increase for Saturday, ahead of our next system to arrive Sunday. Winds will increase overnight Saturday into Sunday, bringing back ridge gusts of 40-45 mph. As Sunday progresses, we anticipate gusts to increase through Sunday evening, reaching 55+ mph by afternoon. Additionally, rain showers will fill in from the northwest, bringing chances of 50-70% north and along I-80, 30-50% in and around the Tahoe Basin, Alpine and Mono counties, and 25-40% for the Basin and Range.
The wet pattern will linger into Monday, with hints of colder air dropping snow levels, bringing a non-zero chance for rain, maybe even snow on the Sierra ridges. Confidence is on the low end for the snow at this point, considering how warm we have been recently. On the other hand, this trough does appear to dig rather far south, signaling a potential for a shot of colder air overnight Sunday into Monday. Overnight lows nearing the mid 40s appear over the western Nevada valleys, and Sierra valleys can expect near freezing temperatures early Monday morning. Looking into midweek and beyond, the showery weather remains in the long range, with cooler temperatures settling in for the duration. Fall, is that you? HRICH
AVIATION
* Light winds and clear skies today and Friday will provide VFR flying conditions across the region. Sierra valley terminal KTRK could see a period of patchy fog overnight tonight.
* Southwest winds increase Saturday, ahead of the next incoming system to arrive Sunday. Ridge gusts near 40-50 kts are possible Sunday, bringing concerns for turbulence and LLWS to valley terminals. HRICH
