AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 321 AM PST Wed Nov 29 2023

SYNOPSIS
Lingering showers will be followed by brief clearing today before an active upper level setup brings more chances of precipitation. Most moisture will be concentrated in northern zones with some interior mountain snow possible Thursday and Friday.
Potential for heavier rainfall is possible late this weekend and early next week.

DISCUSSION
Scattered showers from a weakening offshore low are traversing north through the region this morning, with the highest reflectivity signatures beginning to weaken over the Sacramento Valley. Any residual moisture will dissipate over the next several hours leading to widespread clearing and seasonably cool temperatures. This lull will be short lived as we enter an active period dominated by a series of upper level shortwaves. Cloud cover will return tonight into Thursday ahead of the first round of precipitation that will bring light to moderate rainfall to Del Norte, Humboldt, and Trinity counties. With a cold air mass edging its way into Northern California, snow levels will begin lowering to around 4,000 ft Thursday before quickly dipping into the 2,000 to 3,000 ft range overnight into Friday. However, with most of the precipitation falling before mid level temperatures drop overnight, snowfall amounts are conservative and reserved to the higher elevations of Trinity and Del Norte counties.

A pacific ridge will be the dominant steering force for additional chances of precipitation this weekend. The positioning of this high pressure will steer subtropical moisture into the PNW, but could remain more concentrated north of California. Increasing QPF values accompanied by elevated southerly winds Saturday into Sunday suggest the likelihood of more impactful accumulations of rain and snowfall, especially in the far northern portions of the CWA.

AVIATION
Broken high clouds stream over NWRN CA this morning as a closed upper low slowly slips southward along the coast this afternoon. This low is lofting some light rain showers to primarily Mendocino counties Lake, although current radar data depicts a few have made it as far north as southern Humboldt and Trinity counties. These showers should quickly diminish early this morning. Impacts to aviation from this system are expected to be minimal, with possibly broken MVFR ceilings developing in southern Mendocino early this morning. Otherwise VFR is expected to persist through the TAF period.

MARINE
Southeasterlies weaken this morning as a closed upper low slips southward down the coast. Winds are expected to turn northerly this afternoon, then northerlies strengthen further late Thursday behind another weak frontal passage. Seas should be relatively benign today through Thursday morning, when strengthening northerlies Thursday bring short period seas. The first in a series of larger, fresh NW swells is then expected to fill in Friday and be continually reinforced through the weekend...with seas possibly remaining around or above 10 ft into early next week.
