AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 449 AM PST Sat Dec 9 2023

SYNOPSIS
Dry and mild weather conditions will continue today.
A weak front will bring a chance for rain on Sunday to Humbodlt and Del Norte counties. Dry weather is expected to return Monday and continue through much of the week with just a slight chance for rain Wednesday night.

DISCUSSION
High pressure continues to build over the area this morning bringing mainly clear skies and dry conditions. These clear skies have allowed the valleys to see fog again and some areas are likely dense creating hazardous driving conditions.
These low clouds are expected to mainly clear out around mid to late morning, much like yesterday. High temperatures are expected to warm 4 to 8 degrees over yesterday in the areas that mix out, however the inland valleys may struggle to warm up that much if the fog lingers through midday.

Tonight high clouds are expected to move in ahead of the next system. This should limit some of the valley fog in the north, although it is still possible in much of the area. This system is an AR bringing heavy rain to the Pacific Northwest with nearly zonal flow aloft. Sunday a shortwave moving through the flow is expected to drop some rain down into mainly Humbodlt and Del Norte counties. Rainfall amounts have trended upwards in the farthest north mountains with nearly an inch possible right at the Oregon border. Farther south his rapidly falls off with less than a half inch in northern Humboldt county to and only a trace to a few hundredths in southeast Humboldt county. Farther south and east almost no rain is expected.

Monday morning the rain is expected to come to an end and skies are expected to slowly clear through the day. Monday night and Tuesday morning fog is possible in the interior valleys, although confidence one the coverage is low. Otherwise clear skies are expected again. Mid to late int he week most of the models are trying to bring in another system with some light rain, however there is a lot of uncertainty on if or when this will occur. MKK

AVIATION
Cold, high pressure pushing east of the area will continue to promote dry, offshore flow. This will support VFR conditions along the coast through the day. Dry air is even evident for the interior with much less expansive valley fog this morning despite recent rain. Offshore flow will weaken tonight, increasing the chances of a very shallow marine layer along the coast with surface based fog. Any such layer is highly uncertain and would likely be very inconsistent. In any case, MVFR to VFR ceilings are likely to build across the area by Sunday morning as warm, moist air advects back into the area. /JHW

MARINE
Northerly breezes will continue to diminish and then gradually turn south today, being gentle at most. Mostly calm winds combined with a decaying northwest swell currently at 8 feet will contribute to a largely quiet sea state. Southerly winds will briefly increase Sunday along a weak front, but gusts will reach 20 kts at the strongest in the far northern waters, staying less everywhere else. Another westerly swell will build in behind the front. This swell will also be steepest in the northern waters reaching 10 to 12 feet at 13 seconds. This could briefly lead to conditions hazardous for small craft early Sunday morning. Except for a brief period of moderate north winds on Monday that could generate short period seas near 5 feet, an unusually calm sea state is expected for much of next week. /JHW
