SYNOPSIS

A series of low pressure systems will parade across the region, bringing cooler temperatures, afternoon breezes, and a 10-20% chance of afternoon showers and storms through the upcoming week.
Gradual warming returns for the Memorial Day weekend with low-end storm chances.

DISCUSSION

This morning we will see clear skies and light winds to start off the day, but clouds will gather later today. These could contain some showers (10% chance) for the area from Susanville to Gerlach.
Otherwise, most areas will remain dry. As a trough extending from roughly Alberta province in Canada, and draped across the Great Basin exits, and a low positioned off the SoCal coast join together, chances for showers (10%) will return for Monday along the Sierra Crest.

Tuesday is looking dry and mild as the trough moves eastward, with near average temperatures settling in across the region. Wednesday, another low pressure system will drop in along the British Columbia coast, bringing precipitation along the Oregon border (25-35% chance) and wind gusts that will approach 30 mph for western Nevada valleys. That activity is short-lived as the trough is swept east quickly, bringing another drier, yet cooler day for Thursday with the exception of afternoon chances (10-15%)for showers in Mono County.

Now to take a forward glance to the holiday weekend, where ensembles are showing yet another brush-by trough to drop across the Pacific Northwest. For now, the ensembles agree there will be another trough, roughly arriving on the heels of the exiting trough. The depth of the trough will dictate how far south the precipitation chances will be, but for now the Sierra crest, along the Oregon border and out over the Basin and Range will see a 10-15% chance for afternoon showers and storms to appear. Initial indications are highlighting Saturday for the most widespread opportunity to see a shower pop up.
