SYNOPSIS
Low pressure over Missouri this morning will move to the lower Ohio Valley tonight, but then will weaken as it moves north of our area through Saturday. Another low and front will affect the weather late this weekend and into Monday. High pressure returns for early next week.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
Low pressure will track from the mid- Mississippi River Valley this morning to the lower Great Lakes by Saturday morning. That will attempt to lift a surface warm front northward up the Atlantic coastal plain. The front will struggle to reach our area through tonight, but an associated shortwave trough with vorticity advection and rather strong low to mid-level warm air advection will bring a shot of light to moderate rain across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon. We are looking at most areas seeing a couple tenths to a third of an inch of rain. Rain will taper off from west to east early tonight, probably clearing all but coastal areas by midnight or so. It'll remain mild overnight, with lows Saturday morning in the 40s to the south and east of the Lehigh Valley.
SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/
It will be a mild weekend as some upper height rises follow the disturbed weather from Friday/Friday night. Readings for Saturday could reach the low/mid 50s for the Northern areas while upper 50s/low 60s will be found for southern NJ/Delmarva and around the Philadelphia metro areas. The mild readings will carry on into Sunday, but the readings will probably be 5 degrees less than Saturday.
There will be partly to mostly cloudy skies on Saturday. Overall, mostly dry with a weak ridge of high pressure over the area. This will not be the case for Sat night/Sunday with low pressure moving north of the area and its associated fronts moving thru. A weak low may develop along the front further creating opportunities for more rains. We could end up with 1/2" to 3/4" or rain for the north/western areas while areas S/E of the fall line will have 1/4" to 1/2" of rain. Rains taper off Sun night as the system continues NE of the region.
LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
The synoptic upper pattern will have a trough across the East and a ridge out West. This will continue into next week with some reinforcement of the trough by midweek. As the week ends, the trough will flatten somewhat. Not much in the way of any significant features in the upcoming week. The low from the weekend pulls away Monday morning with some lingering slight chance pops for Monday. A cold front and upper short-wave may create the opportunity of more scattered showers Tue night/Wed but pops are again only slight chance or low chance.
Temperatures will start the week a bit above normal, but then readings will drop below normal with the coldest period being Wed night/Thu. By next weekend, readings will moderate back close to normal.
AVIATION /15Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Rest of today...VFR through 21Z, then low ceilings and rain will move into the region from west to east, with conditions reaching IFR around 00Z. Winds very light SSW.
Tonight...MVFR to IFR conditions. Rain tapers off from west to east 03-06Z, possibly lingering past 06Z along the coast including ACY. Very light southerly or calm winds.
Outlook...
Sat... Low clouds early, then VFR returning.
Sat night thru Sun night...Low clouds/rain expected. IFR/LIFR possible.
Mon... VFR returning. Gusty winds.
Tue... VFR expected attm. Gusty winds possible.
MARINE
Seas mainly into the 2-4 ft range this morning will continue through this afternoon, with SSW winds mainly 10-15 kt. An increase in southwest winds beyond 40 nm offshore may bring in a short-period swell, with seas closer to 4 ft or so overnight, but otherwise in our coastal zones winds will actually ease, especially near shore, to near 5 kt by Saturday morning.
Outlook...
sub-SCA conditions for the weekend and then SCA winds and seas for Monday and through early Tuesday. Rains expected for Sat night into Sunday night. Fair Mon/Tue.
