AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Albany NY 1015 PM EDT Wed Sep 11 2024

SYNOPSIS
Some patchy fog is expected to form in valley areas tonight, otherwise, dry and quiet weather is expected overnight with comfortable temperatures. A warming trend is anticipated over the next several days with high temperatures rising above normal. With high pressure in control, no precipitation is expected through the weekend with a continued mostly clear sky.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THURSDAY MORNING/
As of 1015 PM EDT... Minor update this late evening to hourly temperatures to reflect current surface observations across the Adirondacks and Lake George-Saratoga Region as temperatures are already in the upper 40s and low 50s. Otherwise, the rest of the forecast is doing well and on track for tonight into tomorrow morning.

As of 750 PM EDT...The current forecast is on track for this evening and no changes were made with this update time. See previous discussion below for more details...

As of 336 PM EDT...Surface high pressure (around 1023 mb) is still located right over the forecast area this afternoon.
Visible satellite imagery continues to show fairly clear skies over the area, with just some thin bands of high cirrus clouds around, especially southern parts of the area.

Through this evening and into tonight, high pressure will stay in control and will slowly drift eastward into New England.
Upper level heights and temps aloft will be slowly rising as well. A weak upper level disturbance will be passing across Quebec, but should stay well north of the area. As a result, skies should stay fairly clear for this evening into tonight.
With the passing disturbance, some mid/high clouds can't be totally ruled out for far northern areas, but skies should still be fairly clear for much of the area.

With the mostly clear skies and light/calm winds, good radiational cooling is expected. Some patchy fog will form in typical valley areas and near bodies of water for the late night hours, despite the thin high clouds. Lows will range from the mid 40s in the high terrain to the low to mid 50s in valley areas.

SHORT TERM /6 AM THURSDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/
Dry and quiet weather is expected to continue through the short term period.

Surface high pressure will remain located just east of the area off the coast of New England. Meanwhile, upper level heights will continue to build, with a blocking ridge in place aloft.
Thanks to the blocking ridge in place, the remains of TC Francine will stay well southwest of the area over the lower Mississippi Valley. A weak front will pass across northern New England on Friday, but this will stay too far northeast to have an impact on our area as well. With the ridge in place and warm temps aloft, it will stay dry with a mostly clear sky and limited cloud cover. Some patchy fog will continue to develop in valley areas for the late night hours, but it should burn off by the mid morning hours.

Temps will be moderating above normal. Highs on Thursday will be in the mid 70s to low 80s in valley areas and increase to the upper 70s to mid 80s by Friday. Overnight lows will generally be in the 50s.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
The strong upper level ridging will continue to be in the place for the weekend and into early next week. There looks to be a rex block type of setup, with the ridge over the Northeast and eastern Great Lakes, while a closed low is in place over the Deep South, as the remains of TC Francine and an additional coastal low bring unsettled weather to the southern parts of the CONUS. With this blocked pattern, a prolonged period of dry weather looks to be in place for the weekend into early next week. For now, will not forecast any POPs for Saturday through Tuesday.

Upper level heights and temps will be above normal, allowing for highs to be above normal (although probably not near record-breaking levels). Daytime temps should reach into the low to middle 80s for valley areas for Saturday through Tuesday. Overnight lows will settled back into the 50s to near 60. With increasing low level moisture, dewpoints may be back into the 60s for valley areas. Considering this, some additional late night/early morning fog looks to be a good bet for valley areas.

Towards the middle of the week, some moisture may finally start working its way northward up the eastern seaboard as the coastal disturbance starts moving north or northeast into the mid-Atlantic States. Although there remains a lot of uncertainty, there is the potential for some showers to finally return to the area (mainly southern areas) towards Wednesday with a mostly cloudy sky returning to the area. Temps will continue to remain slightly above normal through the middle of the week.

AVIATION /02Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/
Through 00z Thursday...VFR conditions prevail through the TAF period for KALB and KPOU. Vicinity fog can develop near these TAF sites, but confidence is low to include it in the TAF. For KGFL and KPSF, patchy fog has chances of developing again during the overnight hours into tomorrow morning. Depending on forecast trends, may need to adjust start timing of fog development for these TAF sites. Periods of IFR/MVFR conditions can be experienced between 12/08z and 12/12z, so kept mention of lower visibilities/ceilings in TEMPO groups as these conditions can be periodically occurring and kept VFR conditions in the prevailing.

Winds continue to be light and variable until 12/06z when they become calmer through the morning hours. Winds increase tomorrow afternoon to between 5 and 10 knots.

Outlook...

Thursday Night through Monday: No Operational Impact. NO SIG WX.
