- Cloudy and Cold With Lake effect Snow
There remains several distinct forecast questions over the next few days. The first is, how cold will it be this morning? An upper level trough axis is extending from an upper level low over Minnesota extending to southern Ontario. Along that trough is a moisture field through the mid levels that is sandwiching a cold air mass across the Mid Atlantic, the Great lakes region and into the upper Midwest. That moisture field has allowed for low level clouds to remain over the Lower Michigan. That cloud deck has kept temperatures from dropping precipitously.
The coldest air from the above mentioned system will continue to retreat to the west towards morning and a balmy -18C will reside overhead. Any clearing will allow for temps to drop. However, temps are currently holding in the low teens. Have increased lows but latest CAMS have a window of clearing possible towards sunrise which should allow temps to drop into the single digits.
Cloudy skies will continue through the day and temps will climb to around 20. A ribbon of moisture will remain along the lakeshore and with the northerly winds will allow lake effect snow showers along the western halves of those counties. An inch or two is expected through the day today along the lakeshore, though due to the narrowness of the band and impacts, have decided against an advisory.
- Lake effect Snow continues through Thursday
To advise or not to advise, that is the question. A strong 925mb-850mb ribbon of instability will fuel increased lake effect snow showers this evening into Thursday. A short wave should bring increased instability that could bring a robust but short lived period of snow showers tonight into early Thursday morning.
The areas most affected will be near the points and Western Van Buren county. After coordination with Northern Indiana, they have decided to issue an advisory. However, The fetch of the whole lake will bear down on them, while it will only give us a glancing blow. We will still have to watch as far Western Van Buren could get 3 to 5 inches of snow today, through tomorrow with the bulk of that coming in late tonight into early Thursday. A strong DGZ will be present from 06Z to 12Z Thursday. However as stated above, it is a small area of impact so will hold off on any headlines for now.
The robust snow through far southwest Michigan will taper off Thursday morning into Thursday afternoon. For the rest of our region outside of the lakeshore counties, there should be only light snow accumulations around an inch.
- Slight chances for snow with warming through weekend.
Zonal flow will then dominate the pattern through the weekend, with only light snow possible, and while those hoping for a respite from the bitter cold should not have long to wait.
Temperatures will climb through the weekend and into next week. Oh what dreams may come as highs will rise above freezing early next week with Max temperatures inching just above normal into the 40s through mid next week.
AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z THURSDAY/
Issued at 620 AM EST Wed Feb 19 2025
Lake effect snow showers will continue near Lake Michigan through tonight. Brief periods of IFR are possible at MKG through today but MVFR should prevail most of the time. Elsewhere conditions will range from MVFR to VFR as thin stratus deck with bases 2500 to 3500 feet AGL and tops only about 3 to 4 kft AGL persists into tonight. Northwest winds less than 10 knots through tonight.
