Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI 944 PM CST Sun Mar 3 2024

- Gusty southerly winds up to 40 mph will cause loose objects to blow around and may cause travel difficulties for high profile vehicles today.

- Temperatures will continue to be well above normal and may break records again tomorrow

- Elevated fire weather conditions west of Interstate 90 into this evening.

- Showers & a few strong storms are expected Monday afternoon/night along a slow- moving cold front.

Issued 940 PM CST Sun Mar 3 2024

As the front pushes into part of the region this evening expect some shower potential (20-30%) though best chances will be further north. Lighter showers may struggle to reach the surface given the 20 degree dewpoint depressions. Otherwise as the front pushes through tonight expect winds to shift more west to southwest and come down fairly significantly. Forecast Monday remains on track.

Issued 251 PM CST Sun Mar 3 2024

Tonight through Monday night:

Gusty winds will ease after sunset as the boundary layer decouples. Some breezes will linger into this evening as a strong jet will still remain aloft. A weak occluded front is expected to pass over northern portions of the state tonight, spawning some scattered showers, mainly over central WI. This front will then sag southward as a cold front and stall over central WI overnight into tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow, a low pressure system will approach from the central plains and kick the front through during the afternoon and evening hours. Low lvl moisture will be lacking but forcing along the front will be enough to form a line of high based storms along the front in an environment characterized by around 500 to 1000 J/kg of weak MUCAPE. Effective shear will be enough to support storm organization however and with mid lvl lapse rates around 7 C/km, some small hail may form in the stronger storms. Gusty winds can't be ruled out either, as CAM models soundings show an inverted v in the lowest 1 to 2 km. This line of storms should move into our western county around 3pm tomorrow and gradually work east with time. The line may lose some potency as it travels east, as CAPE will wane after sunset.

Issued 256 PM CST Sun Mar 3 2024

Tuesday through Sunday:

A cold front will push through overnight Monday into Tuesday and temperatures will dip but remain above normal near 50 during the daytime hours on Tuesday. Conditions should remain dry and skies may gradually clear through the day as a high pressure center slides by to the north over Canada. Conditions will remain dry into Wednesday before WAA delivers a glancing blow to the upper Great Lakes and we see rain late Thursday into Friday.
Temperatures will dip slightly into the 40s following this system, but will still remain well above normal.

Issued 940 PM CST Sun Mar 3 2024

Some SCT/BKN mid to high CIGS associated with the front this evening. Some shower potential and possibly even a rumble of thunder will mostly be relegated to central WI. Otherwise expect a wind shift tonight with the passing front from southerly winds to more west to southwest. Into Monday morning the next system will be pushing in bringing rain and storm chances across southern WI. This will carry MVFR/IFR CIGS into much of southern WI through Monday night at least with lowest CIGS expected into the evening hours. Some rain induced VSBY restrictions should be expected, especially with any moderate to heavy rainfall. Best storm and heavier rain chances will largely be expected in the afternoon and evening hours. Stronger storms are possible with the biggest risks being gusty winds and hail. Otherwise expect modest southeast winds Monday.

Issued 303 PM CST Sun Mar 3 2024

Low pressure will deepen this evening over southern Manitoba.
Strong south to southeast winds with gale force gusts will continue into tonight, with the highest gusts concentrated over the central two- thirds of the open waters. A Gale Warning will remain in effect for the everywhere but the north and south end of the lake until midnight CST. Winds will then diminish quickly early Monday morning as high pressure of 29.9 inches builds into Wisconsin.

Breezy southerly winds are forecast Monday afternoon and night as a cold front progresses across the open waters, and some marine fog can't be ruled out ahead of the front. A south to north wind shift will accompany the boundary, in addition to chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Issued 422 AM CST Sat Mar 2 2024

Gusty southerly 20 foot winds, minimum relative humidities in the 35-40 percent range, and FFMC readings between 85 and 90 will support elevated fire weather conditions to the northwest of Madison into this evening. Conditions are expected to remain below critical thresholds, but dispersal is forecast to be very good to excellent. The combination of the aforementioned gusty 20 foot winds and drying fuels will be conducive to the spread of fires.
