SYNOPSIS
Light snow lingers near coastal Maine into day break followed by breaks in the clouds for the rest of today. A drying trend follows today with cooler and mostly dry conditions through the balance of the week. Temperatures moderate into the weekend with the next widespread precipitation event arriving late in the weekend.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
645 AM Update...The short wave responsible for last night's light snow is now exiting through the Gulf of Maine with short wave ridging building in from the west. Have mainly trimmed down PoPs over the next few hours based on latest radar trends and surface observations.
Previously...
A short wave is currently trekking east across Maine and will be exiting the area around day break. This short wave along with an inverted trough has allowed for light snow to persist across the mountains through western and central Maine. This area of light snow will diminish over the next few hours, although may linger into mid morning near the Mid Coast. After light snow ends... today will be mostly dry with breaks in the cloud cover developing this morning. Highs will range from the upper 20s north to upper 30s south.
SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY/
High pressure noses in from the north this evening into tonight while trough digs across the Mid Atlantic. This trough will spread some clouds into southern NH and far SW Maine tonight along with low chances for some snow showers. Across northern and eastern zones skies will be partly cloudy. Lows tonight will range from the single digits to around 10 degrees across the north towards central Maine while southern areas will be see lows in the mid 20s.
High pressure over southern Canada presses further south into the area Wednesday leading to skies turning partly to mostly sunny. Winds will be light with highs ranging from the mid 20s north to mid 30s south.
LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/
An upper level trough finally exiting the region Wednesday night as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the west. This will allow for dry conditions as well as seasonably cool temperatures with this slow moving and narrow ridge. Temperatures will range from the mid 20s north to the lower 30s south on Thursday before moderating to the 30s to lower 40s on Friday. Some Cloudiness will spill over the top of the ridge at this time with the onslaught of warm air advection aloft.
00Z operational models as well as ensemble solutions remain in relatively good agreement digging a significant short wave over the Plain states on Saturday. Cyclogenesis will be in full swing on Sunday as low pressure tracks poleward towards the Great Lake States. This will allow for a strong cold front to approach from the west Sunday night. Ahead of this front, strong southerly winds can be expected with ensemble solutions suggesting relatively high probabilities of H8 winds over 40 kts during this period. Rainfall of a half inch to an inch will allow for snowmelt across the region as well.
Sharply colder and drier air will follow on Monday as the storm exits through eastern Canada. Continued windy conditions can be expected as well.
AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/
Short Term...Light snow over western Maine diminishes around 12Z with conditions improving to VFR for TAF sites today. The exception maybe linger MVFR conditions at KHIE. Mainly VFR is expected tonight, although low cigs and isolated snow showers could impact KPSM, KMHT, and KCON late tonight. VFR then prevails for all Wednesday.
Long Term...Mainly VFR conditions expected this week.
MARINE
Short Term...Light snow or rain showers linger over the waters this morning. NE winds will gust around 20 kts through daybreak with a brief period of gusts approaching 25 kts offshore of the Mid Coast. Winds subside through the rest of today with conditions staying below SCA thresholds tonight into Wednesday.
Long Term...Relatively quiet conditions can be expected this week. A strong southerly gradient develops on Sunday into Sunday night with gale force winds likely. A warm front approaches the region on Friday into Saturday with lowering ceilings possible but still likely VFR. IFR and LIFR conditions are expected to develop on Sunday as a strong area of low pressure passes by to our west.
