Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 558 AM EDT Sat Jul 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
High pressure will bring drier air along with warm temperatures this weekend. Areas of smoke aloft may dim the sun at times. Low pressure may approach the Gulf of Maine early next week, with unsettled weather moving into the region mid week. Temperatures remain warm through the period, with increasing humidity next week.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/
Update...
Have increased the fog coverage across the region for early this morning, especially in New Hampshire. Otherwise, just minor changes to the early morning update for temperatures, dew points and mountain cloud cover.

Prev Disc...
Patchy inland valley fog will mix out this morning. This will allow for mostly sunny conditions throughout the day as a large ridge of high pressure remains over the region. The sun may be filtered by smoke at times.

After a chilly start as compared to the last few weeks, temperatures will climb into the lower to mid 80s over southern interior locations with cooler conditions in the northern mountains. Along the immediate shoreline, the weak gradient will allow for sea breezes to dominate with temperatures reaching the 70s to lower 80s. The atmosphere will remain dry with surface dew points mainly in the 50s.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/
Mainly clear skies can be expected once again tonight. More patchy fog may develop across the interior valleys. In addition, the latest HRRR solution suggested that maritime fog may be approaching the coastline from the Gulf of Maine during the overnight hours. This will occur as boundary layer winds becoming southeasterly ahead of an approaching system off the Mid Atlantic coastline. Min temperatures will drop off into the 50s over most of the region with the exception of southernmost New Hampshire.

Mostly sunny conditions will return for Sunday. However, a system off the southern New England coastline will allow for some mid and high level moisture to enter southern portions of the forecast area. There will also continue to be low cloudiness and patchy fog potentially lingering along and near the coastline as winds remain onshore off the Gulf of Maine. High temperatures will reach the 80 to 85 degree range in most areas with a light increase in humidity levels as well.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/
The extended period start quiet but turns unsettled for much of next week. Although no all day rain is expected, chances of showers do increase.

In the dailies: Monday and Tuesday we will be tracking a compressed area of low pressure both at the surface and aloft that originates over the western Atlantic. Models show this system being pulled to the west nearing south coastal areas which will result in an increase in shower possibilities later Monday into Tuesday. There is still uncertainty as to how far west the low makes it and how much moisture will be drawn in as models show the system weakening as it approaches the coast. The extra cloud cover from this system may help keep temperatures down some...but still expect warm conditions with dew points on the increase resulting in muggy conditions.

For Wednesday though Friday a warm front will push over area resulting in a warm and muggy airmass with more chances of showers and thunderstorms. This is a rather typical mid summer pattern for New England.

AVIATION /10Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
Short Term...VFR. Some restrictions may be possible towards LEB/HIE for early this morning in valley fog. Some elevated wildfire smoke may be present in the region today, but not expecting significantly reduced ground visibility at this time.
Winds become onshore this afternoon along the coast before becoming light tonight with more patchy fog and localized LIFR and IFR conditions. Southeasterly winds can be expected on Sunday.

Long Term...
VFR conditions Monday give way to MVFR with areas of IFR in scattered showers Monday Afternoon and Tuesday. Areas of fog may develop Monday Night.

MARINE
Short Term...Winds become onshore during the afternoon hours today. Relatively light southerly winds will continue tonight into Sunday as high pressure moves south of the region.
Fog may limit visibilities tonight and linger into Sunday.

Long Term...
In general wind and waves to remain below SCA levels through Monday. There could be a period of SCA winds and waves Tuesday and Wednesday as a southerly flow increases. Expect showers and areas of fog to develop late Monday through Wednesday.
