AVIATION
18/06Z TAFs...N through E winds (offshore flow) over the next 24 hours will result in widespread VFR. Wind gusts in the afternoon and early evening on Saturday will be strongest along the coast (peaking in the 20-30 kt range). Elsewhere, for inland areas across southwest Oregon and northern California, gusts of 15-20 kt can be expected in the late afternoon and early evening.
Other than patchy, shallow river valley fog/low clouds very late tonight/early Friday morning near the coast, VFR should persist with lighter winds (except near the coast range mountains where it'll remain breezy). -Spilde/CC
MARINE
Updated 800 PM Thursday, April 17th...A thermal trough will maintain gusty north winds and steep, hazardous seas for all areas into this weekend. The strongest winds and steepest seas will be south of Cape Blanco. The thermal trough will vary in strength with somewhat lighter winds and seas tonight into Friday. Even so, seas could remain very steep (~10 feet at 8 seconds) beyond 5 NM from shore and south of Port Orford. North winds could approach or exceed gale force from around Gold Beach southward and within 30 NM from shore Saturday afternoon and evening with very steep seas up to 15 feet at 8 seconds. -Spilde/CC

DISCUSSION...Satellite image shows clear skies over the entire forecast area. An upper trough east of the forecast area is diving south and this has resulted in increasing winds east of the Cascades and the mid slopes and ridges along and west of the Cascades. It also bringing a dry air mass near the surface and aloft which has prevented any cloud formation.
Skies will remain clear tonight with an offshore flow. However still could not rule out low clouds forming in portions of the Coquille Basin and the deeper valleys in Douglas county late tonight into Friday morning. The thermal trough will be situated along the south Oregon coast, resulting in gusty east to northeast breezes near and at the ridges along the coastal mountains in southwest Oregon.
Friday will be dry with afternoon temperatures warming up some, and will be above seasonal norms. We can expect gusty afternoon and early evening breezes east of the Cascades and the higher terrain west of the Cascades. However, winds are not expected to be as strong as upper ridging builds in and winds aloft become weaker.
Saturday, a weak upper trough will move into the area. The main effect from this will be cooler afternoon temperatures, more cloud cover, and gusty afternoon and early evening breezes east of the Cascades and interior westside valleys. The operational models are leaning towards dry Saturday, but could not rule out a few light showers north of Cape Blanco and northwest Douglas County Saturday morning, but not enough for anything measurable.
Another upper trough will move north of the area Sunday, but the trajectory is not one that typically results in precipitation.
However, we'll likely experience gusty afternoon and early evening breezes east of the Cascades and interior westside valleys. Also afternoon temperatures will be cooler than Saturday.
Weak troughiness remains over the area Monday. It's likely to remain dry, with gusty breezes in the afternoon.
Tuesday, upper troughing remains, but the operational models some some evidence supporting convective showers or even a slight chance of storms. However, the majority of the individual ensemble members do not. For now, we'll keep the forecast dry, but this is something we'll continue to monitor. -Petrucelli
